Christmas at Marseille - My new favorite restaurant

Just had a wonderful dinner at Marseille. I had not been before but it has been on my list of "must tries" for a long time as I have always enjoyed Nice Matin. I don't know why I've waited so long but when I saw that they were open on Christmas I decided to try it. When I inquired about the menu I was told there was a 3 course prix fixe for $38.50 and the person rattled off a few dishes which did not sound terribly exciting but I thought for the price it was worth risking it. Well, it turned out there were about 10 choices for each course and they all looked so interesting it was hard to decide what to have. We started with the sheep's cheese gnocchi with leeks, and risotto with artichokes and rock shrimp. For main courses, rack of lamb with oyster mushrooms, brussels sprouts, grapes, several other vegetables, and roast pork stuffed with prunes, served with red cabbage. Desserts were a buche de noel made with raspberry mousse on a chocolate cake base, and a date and toffee pudding. Everything was perfect and a real bargain for a holiday dinner. The service was excellent and the atmosphere festive and comfortable. We loved everything about it. I expect to be returning regularly.

You beat me to this post! I was going to thank everyone on CH for recommending Marseille for a variety of needs. So, since the price was right, and we all like French, 5 of us took a flier on Christmas dinner this afternoon. We were all completely pleased and I got major points for doing such a good job of finding a place. The price was more than reasonable. 2 of us had the gnocchi and rack of lamb. Two had the Arctic Char, one the consommé to start, and one had Steak Frites. Everyone was delighted with their meal. While the desserts were good, next time, I'd skip dessert. I know we'll all be back to Marseille for pre-theater, nice lunch, any old reason. Thanks to everyone. Happy, healthy New Year.

Thanks for the report. I also discovered Marseille on this Board (thanks, RGR).

        rrems and Jane,

Thanks so much for your reports. As fdr indicated, Marseille is a favorite of ours, and so I'm especially glad to read such positive reports. Truth is, we haven't been in a while. Definitely time to go back! :-)
