New Year's Eve & Caviar

Where do the 'Hounds get caviar? I don't need a lot, just two empty-nesters, but I'd appreciate any input. Have a Healthy, Happy, & Chowish New Year to all.

    russian stores, including berezka, russian village on beacon near winthrop in brookline, bazaar - salmon roe caviar, they'll let you taste to see which kind you prefer, and for black caviar, my favorite is osetra, usually 80.00 an ounce! ouch!!

      Whole Foods (at least in Woburn/Winchester) has an interesting selection in the fish section.

        I like the Russian delis like Bazaar in Brighton. They are the best value. I also like their cold-smoked salmon (Chili salmon).

          We get ours at Bazaar each year, along with our zakuski...

            any specific kinds at Bazaar? I'm thinking of stopping by this weekend but my caviar knowledge is pretty non-existant.

              From Bazaar, I have 200g jar of salmon eggs(reddish color)..probably butchering the language but the brand looks like Krpa Uapckaa/ Red Pearl..made in USA. In Bazaar it's right near the excellent herring and smoked salmon. I forget the cost; but it's a great value..and works well if you don't want to pay up for the pricier Ossetra or Sevruga; which you can get at Savenors.

              A nice presentation is to open some oysters and put a small spoonfull of the eggs on top.

                What he said...;)
                We just look at the jars, and see what fits into our budget, but TC does like some kind of black ones....With butter, and brown bread, like a Russian... and blini too, if you get there early enough..

                  in addition to the pre-packaged jars, bazaar has three types of salmon caviar they sell by the pound ($10/lb, $16/lb, and $20/lb). you can ask to try all three of them and pick your caviar and your amount. I find these to be better than the caviar in the jars. I usually end up getting the $20/lb, but occasionally the $16/lb is better (today it was too salty, so I got a pound of the $20 as usual).

                  for black caviar, I think they may not carry surgeon caviar, but they do have black paddlefish caviar (n.america's answer to sevruga). got some today for the first time ($40/2oz), haven't tried it yet so can't offer any opinion.

                    Thanks for the feads-up about the bulk salmon caviar...We ended up getting some, so we could buy a bunch of other things...Smoked sturgeon, buns stuffed with cabbage and egg, Bakes salmon with a bechamel and vegetable sauce, mushroom pate, salad of smoked sturgeon, egg, and dill, pickled mushrooms, a mushroom, eggplant and red pepper sald, with a liberal amount of cilantro (Great!), their fabulous pickled herring, (more like sashimi), blck bread, matnakash, halvah, strudel and cherry pierogifor dessert...Andi had to stop at Sevan, to pik up taramasalata, and then snagged some Touloum, a chese I had never heard of. A dry, crumbly goat cheese aged in the goat skin. OY!

                      fyiw, I saw a large amount of salmon roe on sale at the Japanese market in Porter Exchange which I can never spell or say correctly - Kotubukaya (sp!)?? They had it on sale on Dec 31 when I stopped in to buy toro and fixing for a NYE sushi dinner and was surprised at the amount that was for sale - probably close to 1 lb @ $27-ish per pound. I opted to buy a much smaller amount to make beggar's purses for dinner and then even had some left over to put on top of toast spread with cream cheese the next day. I shop there often and haven't noticed this quantity for sale so I am assuming it was for the holdidays. It was great stuff - tasted of the sea with an essence of salmon but not too salty... yuuuum!

                      just for the record, the result on the paddlefish caviar was "eh."

                      it was fine and we certainly ate it all; it was fresh and cared for, so bazaar did their job. we just weren't so excited about this particular product itself - a bit metallic, thick, and lifeless. for my $40 at bazaar I'd rather have 2lb of great salmon caviar. :}

                Berezka on Commonwealth (by Harvard) also has a nice selection. We got one small sturgeon ($67!) and one small salmon (which they gave us free as a New Year gift). Other pluses of Berezka include the Macedonian sour cabbage leaves, if you are inclined to make stuffed cabbage for your party.

                Some Costco's carry Segruva in 2oz jars (with a mother of pearl spoon) for around $80.
                Go on line and/or call them.
