Are there any resterants that still do the traditional revellion dinner late at night, after midnight mass? I have family coming into the city in the late evening.
Not sure. But, if there is, those outside of the French 1/4 aren't allowed to say. I just found out that the word "Revellion" is a copyrighted name. A friends restaurant recieved a call from the French Market Corp. saying that they weren't allowed to use the name as they have the rights to it!?! I know you think I'm full of it, but call them and find out for yourself.
I'm not sure about all the details on the "copyright" issue, but French Quarter Festivals Inc. (www.fqfi.com) has made a big push in the past several years for restaurants in the Quarter to highlight Revellion menus as a part of their "Christmas New Orleans Style" marketing campaign. I have heard that they are territorial about the word, but there ARE places outside the Quarter that offer a prix fixe Revellion menu. The Delachaise comes immediately to mind and I'm certain there are others.
French Market Corp. is the umbrella organization that governs everything in the French Market, including Cafe du Monde. As far as I know they have nothing to do with Revellion.
The French Market Corp. wouldn't exist w/o the French Market, which wouldn't exist w/o the Creoles and their famous and sumptuous Revellion repasts. You can't copyright a culture. If your friend has done her homework and is offering authentic Revellion meals, she should have the right to say so without the permission of some pretentious corporation. Hmm, wonder if they have copyrighted gumbo, pralines, Cafe Brulot, etc. ... But, in answer to your question, I've had numerous, delicious revellion meals during the season, altho I don't adhere to the custom od eating after midnight.
