Coffeecake/danish/ring like Dumas used to make?

A while back, I posted to one of the NYC boards looking to see if anyone sold a coffee cake/danish/ring like Dumas on Lexington Ave in NYC used to make. Nobody did (though Mrs London's in Saratoga Springs seems to make something similar: http://www.mrslondons.com/store_wreat...).

The recent discussion about Zabar's coffee cake, though, got me thinking. Maybe someone has a recipe?

This stuff was delicious. It was a moist, yeasty cake that pulled apart in strands that my childhood fuzzy memories would describe as somewhere between challah and a croissant, only more dense and very moist and buttery. They made one with pecans and raisins and another with almonds and almond paste. Both were amazing. They didn't have any scary white frosting on the top.

Does anyone have a recipe for something like this? I'd love to try making it.

  1. I posted this question over four years ago. I finally found a recipe and made it tonight. The very detailed instructions here actually yield a pretty perfect replica (to my memory, anyway) of a Dumas pecan ring:

Sadly, after posting the question I figured out I'm gluten intolerant. But there's a gluten-free flour in Seattle called Manini's that works about 95% as well as wheat flour for pastry, and it was very patient with me as I rolled and re-rolled out my dough, folding in butter, rolling in the pecan mixture, etc. This cake was the real deal, and I don't say that lightly.

Attaching a picture of my result.
