Help! King's Garden closed, looking for another Chinese restaurant for family outing

inkygirl Dec 20, 2007 08:15 AM

I asked this in my post reply to the King's Garden thread, but I'm worried that some people may not see my question buried in that thread.

My father used to take my mom out for lunch at Sai Woo on Boxing Day when they were first courting. Three kids later, the tradition continued until Sai Woo closed and we switched to King's Garden. Sadly, my mom and my brother are gone but my sister, my dad and I still go out with our husbands/kids.

We were going to make reservations at King's Garden last week but discovered it was closed.

ANY advice appreciated about where we can find a similar restaurant (food, atmosphere, price). Thanks so much!

Debbie

Probably in terms of nice decor, good if not life-changing food, and a moderately expensive price point (for Chinese), Dynasty on Bloor would be great. Plus you've got terrific shopping around there.

E-Pan on Spadina. Excellent Chinese food, really nice setting, friendly service.

Third for Dynasty. E-Pan is not in the same league in terms of atmosphere.

I really like Dynasty too but have you considered Pearl at Harbourfront? I think their dim sum is comparable to Dynasty and the view is fabulous if you can snag a table by the window.

Thanks for this suggestion, mrsleny! Unfortunately I didn't see it until after I had talked it over with my family and made the reservation for E-Pan. I checked out the menu at Pearl, and it does sound fantastic! I must try that sometime.

Just a follow-up: I decided on E-Pan because it was less expensive than Dynasty -- my father pays for us all (seven people, including two children) and he's on a retirement income. We all enjoyed the setting and food very much, and the service was friendly and prompt. Super-clean washrooms! Thanks so much for your suggestions! I'm going to try Dynasty with my husband sometime, too.

Hi inkygirl, how does E-Pan compare to Kings Garden?

Dynasty doesn't come close, we did not enjoy the food both times we went. Pearl is okay and would recommend it over Dynasty.

King's Garden was very special. I don't think there is another restaurant like it. E-Pan has many great dishes in an above average (for spadina) setting.

I never had luck at Asian Legend. One or two good dishes and the rest blah.

Hey Inkygirl... Am seconding the thumbs down on Dynasty. Tried it last week based on this thread. One dish was OK - not great, just OK - the other two were not edible. One had way too much sauce - turning what might have been a crispy delight into soggy mush. Also, problems with staff knowing the dishes - she insisted one dish had ingredients it didn't. A very expensive bad meal.
Will try ePan and Pearl next

I like the food at Dynasty...it's good but not great...and I hate the 80's decor...uncomfy chairs and dirty carpet... I much prefer Asian Legend on Dundas...looks cleaner...food is fresher....my opinion....Miranda

Asian Legend may not be comparable to King's Garden as it's northern chinese food.
