Beijing Star menu and what to order?

Anyone know where i can find a copy of their menu online? I found the standard fare americanized one, but i understand they have a "pink" menu where all the good stuff is? Id love to see a copy of this menu (in english)

What are the best items? I have read the tea smell duck and the lions head meatball are good. Also the hand cut noodles. What else?

    1. I have a pdf if you can't find it. No further advice though. Hmm, lunch...

That would be great! Could you email it to dimsumhunter at gmail dot com
          Thanks!

          • I have had trouble remembering the name but they do an amazing dessert soup with dumplings in it filled with either red bean paste or walnuts.

              1. re: StriperGuy

sounds bizarre for sure! Red bean paste would be ok but i cant stand walnuts.. Will check into it

the waitress told me they didn't have dessert

                    • The standard menu is here: http://bestofmenus.com/menus/ma/walth...

You're right: the pink menu, the specials listed on the whiteboard in the vestibule, and the one-page daily specials menu are the way to go. The lion's-head meatballs are listed under the "casseroles" section as Jumbo Meat Ball Casserole. Knife-cut noodles are the soup noodles: specify "homemade" vs. "regular".

Other worthy dishes include lamb soup with shao-ping (lots of unidentifiable offal in that one), pork with shredded pancake (another type of hand-cut noodle, really), chive pie, Shanghai-style spring rolls, dried bean curd with vegetable, leek pie, spicy beef tripe, sauteed eel, Chinese okra, Sichuan boiled beef, and even the double-cooked pork (real pork belly!). Ask for congee instead of the standard-offer hot and sour or egg drop soups.

What I especially appreciate is that several of these (e.g., meat balls, pork shank, lamb soup, pork w/pancake) are also on the lunch menu, which is less of a commitment--and the lunches I've gotten have been good for 2 meals. Unlike other good suburban places that have boring set lunches.

                            1. re: Aromatherapy

                              Got the menu, thanky aroma!

Some funny named things on there...

                              Kao-fu(The Magic Vegetarian cake)

Last magic cakes i saw were in amsterdam!

                            2. I like the fried beef pancake and pork shank in soy sauce.

                                1. re: sheila

I'll add the Tea Smell (usually called Tea Smoked) Duck from the pink menu.

                                  • chive pie, lamb soup with shao ping, chinese okra, and pork shank in soy sauce

                                      1. re: galangatron

                                        what is shao ping?

                                          1. re: hargau

a semi hard roll served with the lamb soup. tear it up into small pieces and throw it in the bowl. they give you two. makes the dish even better

                                              1. re: galangatron

sounds interesting but im not a fan of mystery offal so i may have to skip that one.

dry sauteed shredded beef sounds good. Curious about what "chef's tender pork" is also

                                                  1. re: hargau

OK So 5 of us are going and im in charge of picking the menu. So far I have:
                                                    Apps:
                                                    Chive Pie
                                                    Fried Beef pan cake
                                                    Shanghai Spring Roll
                                                    Pan fried Ravioli

                                                    Entrees:
                                                    Jumbo Meat Ball Casserole
                                                    Tea Smelled Duck
Soup noodles (home made) w/ seafood
Baby Spareribs in black bean sauce
                                                    Sauteed Chinese Okra

Plus we will have to get at least one americanized dish for one non-adventurous eater in the group.

So is that enough? too much? Sound ok?

Also whats the difference betwen Scallion pie and Chive Pie and are these just typical scallion pancakes?

                                                    Whole yellow croaker???

                                                      1. re: hargau

I got some take out from there yesterday. It was really good.
The lion's head meatballs were very tender and served with great soy braising sauce that had dried shiitake in it. The bok choy wasn't braised but seemed simply stir fried. Pretty decent plain fried rice accompanied it(ordered all from lunch combo menu).

The lamb soup was the equivalent of menudo. Tremendous lamb and tripe flavor with backdrop of cilantro, sesame and a touch of soy. Excellent soup.

I don't know the difference between scallion pie and chive pie but the chive pie I got was also excellent. It looked like a calzone. Not sure what the exterior was made of, perhaps some type of scalded rice flour dough??? The filling was excellent. A lot of sliced scallions, minced pork and scrambled egg. It had a black vinegar, ginger and soy sauce with it.

All of that was accompanied by a very hard steamed bun(not filled and not completely cooked either). Egg drop soup(didn't try it yet) and Porridge which was as plain as could possibly be. It looked like extremely tiny pearls of tapioca.

                                                        $22 for all.

I'm looking forward to trying more.

                                                          1. re: Wursthof

Ok So 5 of us went today for a very nice meal.

Shanghai spring roll - Nicely fried, vegetarian. I generally like them a bit less course inside but this is just a personal preference. Very fresh.

Chive Pie- These were much larger then i imagined. I ordered a double order (4) which was a lot. Ground pork, chives and a little egg in a nice pastry.

Fried Beef Pancake- Again, much larger then i thought. (ordered 4). Nice meat/chive filling inside what seemed like the same pastry as the chive pie. In fact had i know they were so similar i would have just got 2 and 2.

Beijing pan fried ravioli- Decent version of the typical pan fried ravioli. Nicely browned on one side.

Jumbo Meat Ball Casserole- Didnt know what to expect on this. I was sort of expecting one giant meatball! Came with about 5-6 in a nice sauce with black mushrooms and some cabbage underneath. very strong mushroom taste. meatballs were very soft/tender. Very good.

Tea Smelled duck- Excellent version and a entire 1/2 of a good sized duck. Came with 2 steamed buns.

Two side crispy noodles- I wanted the homemade noodles but the lady said they only came in soup and none of us wanted soup. So she suggested lo-mein which we also didnt want. So we ended up with this which was a cantonese style pan fried noodles with chicken on top. Pretty decent version. Sauce a bit darker then the chinatown versions.

Plus we got an order of chicken fingers as a " safety" just in case the non-adventurous one in our group didnt like anything else. Turned out they liked the other things just fine and barely touched the fingers.

I look forward to going back and trying some other items. So much to pick from. They were running all 3 menus today. Dimsum menu, regular menu and the chinese menu.

                                                  2. Earlier, I was craving biryani from Kabab & Tandoor for lunch today, but this post has changed my mind. In a few hours, I'm off to Beijing Star for their lamb soup. Thanks!

                                                      1. Any recs for a fish/veggie guy here? I get intimidated knowing that a chive pie is filled with pork! Who knew? :)
