near Avenue Theatre Denver
Avenue Theatre is the on on 17th right? Maybe between Logan and Penn? If so there are a few very close by options including Stuebans and Avenue Grill.
Avenue Grill is nicer. Usually there is a place at the bar if you don't want to make reservations. Pretty good selection of apps and a decent wine selection. Have not been in a while so probably shouldn't speak to the food. I would probably choose here because its close and would be a nice place pre-theatre type place.
Stuebans is a little more casual but very good food. Not sure on the wine as I have only had cocktails and beer.
Both are within 1-2 blocks of Avenue Theatre.
There is also Uptown Tavern almost accross the street. Can't speak to the food, but its a fun place to get a drink.
Personally I'd call Steuben's "pretty darn good" but not quite "very good." The overall experience, though, is a lot of fun (just wrote about this very thing yesterday on my blog, http://denveater.typepad.com ).The wine list is pretty much an afterthought, which is only fair for a place where beer & hard liquor are more likely to be the order of the day.
I totally agree with you on Steuben's. I enjoy going, but more for the atmosphere than the food, a lot of which is uninspired (but well executed). I actually prefer it as a lunch spot more than dinner.
Another great option for a good wine list and good food just down the street is Aix.
