I need the big, shiny sugar for coating my molasses cookies so that I can (potentially) please the carmudgeon on my list. Thought I had plenty in the pantry. . .

Need some quickly! Any ideas?

Hah! I just went through the exact same problem here in the Raleigh area for my molasses cookies. Checked four supermarkets and found that all the decorating ("sanding") sugars were garishly colored. I couldn't find normal clear sugar in large grain size anywhere. So I settled on the raw sugar you can buy at any grocery store. It may be labelled demerara or just natural cane sugar. The translucent brown color should work well on a dark brown molasses cookie. Please note I am NOT talking about "brown sugar"! :)

Good luck!
