I am trying to find a nice independent coffee shop in new brunswick. Really, I am just looking for, to invoke hemingway, a clean well lit place. Many thanks from a fellow chowhound.

  1. Aren't we all? Your best bet is West End Coffee at 152 Easton Ave. It has a nice vibe- mostly students. The lighting isn't always great if you want to go there to study and the coffee and desserts are a bit lacking. But compared to Starbucks and the completely bizarre and perpetually empty Port City Java, it's a goldmine.

yes! have you tried the upstairs at the food co-op? the guy who runs it is a bit of an eccentric, but it's super clean and the espresso is AMAZING! it's a great place to get work done. i've never tried the juices or sandwiches but they do look pretty good. by the way, it's a vegan cafe.
