upside down/inside out?

I'm having a theme dinner party with all foods upside down and inside out. Does any chowhound out there now of any neat foods that might fit the bill (besides the usual pineapple upside down cake)? In dire need of a savory dish.

Thanks!

  1. Not savory but I love love love inside out carrot cake cookies (done like a sandwich with the icing between two cookies). They get raves whenever I take them anywhere. I will find the recipe if you want it - I think it came from Gourmet.

Here's a link to the recipe

    2. Thinking back to college, there's the upside-down margarita...but I bet this wasn't the kind of thing you had in mind. I also remember a novelty recipe from way back for an 'outside in' hamburger, where all the fixings (ie cheese, onion slice, pickles, lettuce, tomato) are between two ultra-thin meat patties which are pressed around the edge to seal, then cooked. I don't think it's something that would appeal to anybody older than about five, tho.

      1. Thanks for such a quick responses! I've also heard about some mediterranean dish with lamb and rice. Anyone know about this??

        1. Could you make a terrine or loaf with turkey on the inside and dressing on the outside?

hmmmm...has anyone ever made such a thing??

I was thinking of that idea too. Sort of a variation on a knish or something if you did individual ones. A little cranberry sauce inside too maybe?

          2. One cookbook I have which focuses on recipes for ground beef features a hamburger with blue cheese on the inside. Basically, it's surrounded by the ground beef. Looks good, though I've never tried to make it.
There are several recipes I make which require sausage to be taken out of it's casing- would that work for you? There is cassoulet, pasta sauces and chili, and probably dozens of others. GOOD LUCK!

            1. I don't know if you're looking for a main dish or having a finger food type thing, but how about inside out sushi with the rice on the outside? You could also do some sort of upside down jello mold (with fruit maybe?)

              1. How about something like a shepard's pie cooked in the normal way but then turned upside down to serve to that the potatoes are on the bottom?

                1. True Potatoes Anna are upside down. When you take them out of the pan you flip it over and cut like pie. To make it more savory you could add some bacon pieces, and herbs to the layers you build.

                  1. Here is the Persian baked rice and lamb dish, it's called Tah Chin. Theres a picture of it also.

You could also make an Apple Tarte Tatin which is an apple tart that gets unmolded and served upside down.

Not sure if you want outside in, but a Terducken would fill the bill.

                    2. Wow! Thanks for all the great suggestions. I think I might try that lamb and rice dish. It sounds delicious.

                      1. What about arancini - the Italian balls where meat is inside rice. Or sushi with the rice on the outside.

I think my link above did not work - it's a Gourmet recipe from April 2004 - Inside Out Carrot Cake Cookies. I got it right away on Epicurious by searching for carrot cookie.
