Mexican food

Does anyone know of any really good, authentic mexican restaurants in DC. In particular, I am looking for a place with an ala cart menu. Good tamales are a plus! Any that are close to adams morgan/glover park would be best.

The short answer is no, but if you go to El Rinconcito Dos in the 1300 Block of Park Rd., get the carne deshilada (with egg) plus a tamale or two. This is one of my favorite meals in DC.

Many many discussions of this question, and feelings can run high. Besides, "authentic" means different things, as in, a particular region of Mexico? Or Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex, or what?

Mixtec is a nice place with nice people, and the owner is actually Mexican, but the food isn't very good, so don't go with high expectations. There are some good taquerias around, but for tamales, I don't know. Definitely try Taqueria Distrito Federal in Columbia Heights. Here're some of the recent threads. Mixtec in Adams Morgan. Best mole sauce in DC, but everything else is good, too (except the tortilla chips, for some reason).

The most authentic Mexican I've found in the DC area is the "little Mexico" area in Bladensburg. Lots of places there including some taco trucks, very authentic, and very inexpensive. Along semi-residential Edmonston Rd, you'll feel like you're in Mexico. Here are a couple of places to start with:

La Sirenita, 4911 Edmonston Rd, just a bit east of, and parallel to, Kenilworth Avenue

El Tapatio, 4309 Kenilworth Ave

Taco's Pepito's Bakery II in Adams Morgan is the best this transplanted Californian has had so far.
