Many many discussions of this question, and feelings can run high. Besides, "authentic" means different things, as in, a particular region of Mexico? Or Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex, or what?
Mixtec is a nice place with nice people, and the owner is actually Mexican, but the food isn't very good, so don't go with high expectations. There are some good taquerias around, but for tamales, I don't know. Definitely try Taqueria Distrito Federal in Columbia Heights. Here're some of the recent threads. Please report back if you find anything you like!:

The most authentic Mexican I've found in the DC area is the "little Mexico" area in Bladensburg. Lots of places there including some taco trucks, very authentic, and very inexpensive. Along semi-residential Edmonston Rd, you'll feel like you're in Mexico. Here are a couple of places to start with:
La Sirenita, 4911 Edmonston Rd, just a bit east of, and parallel to, Kenilworth Avenue
El Tapatio, 4309 Kenilworth Ave
