Southwest France?

  • 6

We're getting ready for our annual Christmas trip, and wonder if anyone has suggestions? We'll be based in Bordeaux, and will visit Arcachon (is Chez Yvette still good?) Thinking about going back to La Rochelle, Cognac, Pays Basque, or the Perigord noir. I'd love to hear your suggestions. I especially appreciate low key places, with local flavors.

  1. In La Rochelle you need to know only two words: Bar Andre.

Thanks, Erica, Bar Andre is an old friend! I'm looking for new ones!

    2. If you'd like to take a 2 hr. drive from Bordeaux to Bayonne, Pays Basque, I can highly recommend the Auberge du Cheval Blanc.

Charming old post house decor, delightful Basque cuisine from Chef Tellechea. 1 Michelin star. 30 euro weekday menu.

      68 rue Bourgneuf (Petit Bayonne)

      1. If you are going near Biarritz, you should try La Table des Freres Ibarboure. It has one Michelin star and is elegant, cozy and the updated regional food is superb. The owners are very welcoming.

          rrems,
          I agree! It's fabulous.
Also Auberge de la Galupe, in a charming coaching inn at the river's edge in Urt. www.lagalupe.com

        2. Thanks for all the ideas! We'll see what the weather's doing and head in the most favorable direction (don't you love the microclimates on the east coast of the Atlantic)? Have never been to Cheval blanc nor Freres Ibarboure-both sound promising!
