quiet place south of 23rd

My friend has a hearing issue, so I am looking for someplace not too loud, but not necessarily romantic. I wanted to go to Perilla, but it was booked. (Looking for this Thursday/primetime). Any ideas in Manattan, south of 23rd? TIA

Not sure if this will fit the bill but Eleven Madison Park is right at 23rd. We just had a stellar meal there and one of the many good points other than the food was that it was easy to converse.

Small correction: EMP is on the corner of Madison & 24th.

Fleur de Sel is on 20th, b/t 5th & B'way. The contemporary French cuisine is delicious; the wine list is excellent; service is pleasant and professional; the small, cozy space has attractive decor; and the conversation-friendly noise level is perfect for someone with a hearing problem.

Those weren't directions, it was a generalized comment as to the area it was in.

Wined Up, just above Punch, is great. Wonderful wines and tasty small plates. 15 East, for sushi, also has great acoustics.

Gascogne at 8th Avenue and 18th Street? Wonderful food, quiet, very warm but not overly romantic.
