Sacramento: Specialty/ethnic food shops?

  • 4

Looking for shops in Sacto area to buy interesting specialty foods for christmas gifts. First stop is Corti Bros, so Italian ingredients are probably covered. Any suggestions for stores that carry interesting Asian, African, Latino, or other ingredients appreciated. Proximity to downtown/midtown/Land Park a plus.

(Nope, not looking for anything in specific. Just want to give an adventurous uncle who lives in a rural part of a Southern state stuff that he probably couldn't find otherwise.)

Thanks!

  1. I can think of Oto's and SF which are a good start. I do not know about African. Franklin Blvd is probably the best bet for Mercados, but I cannot think of any off hand.

    1. Corti's doesn't focus on Italian food; rather, it's an upmarket full-service grocery. Best place in town to buy exotic ingredients from cuisines that aren't well-represented in the Sacto population. It's the place to get things like Israeli couscous, harissa, saba, boquerones, membrillo, etc.

For Japanese, Oto's new place is the bomb. For pan-Asian, I prefer Wing Wa to SF.

For Mexican groceries I head to Carniceria Familia Lopez on Manzanita, but just because it's close to home. There's another closer to you on Marconi just east of Business 80.

Desi Bazaar way out east on Madison has a good collection of Indian groceries, and there's a Persian place called Saffron Market on Auburn Blvd. near Orange Grove Blvd. There are also a bunch of small Russian / Ukrainian / Armenian markets scattered around town; I go to Kolobok (used to be Ararat) on Fair Oaks Blvd. near the curve.

My son's girlfriend, who is from Japan, is always asking him to drive her to Oto's for her shopping....(she DOES chip in for the gas). Considering this is over 200 miles round trip, I have to assume that it means the place is worth going to :-)

      2. Thanks, y'all. Oto's was a big win and a new favorite.
