East Village Mexican: Mercadito vs La Palapa

Having birthday dinner for my boyfriend on Friday night. There will probably be around 6-8 people having dinner.

He wants Mexican and needs to be near the East Village because he wants to check out this bar in the area after dinner.

I've been to La Palapa on St. Mark's a couple of times and always enjoyed it, but I've been reading some good things about Mercadito.

Better food is important, but if they're comparable then I think being comfortable with a large party comes a close second in importance.

Any recommendations you might have are appreciated. Or if anyone knows of another good Mexican spot in the area that is worth checking out.

  1. If you're willing to venture a bit more south, I'd head to Barrio Chino in the LES. Otherwise, I think La Palapa is very "birthday festive." Mercadito is tasty, but it's not as fun and rowdy as La Palapa, IMO.
