Ethiopian in Houston?
I know I've seen some discussion of this somewhere but a search of CH didn't turn up any threads. Any Houston hounds have any recs? b4-u-eat lists 5, 2 pretty close to me.
Also a question about etiquette -- is the injera sturdy enough to scoop up the food a la tortilla chips or is it used more to pinch some food and bring it to your mouth?
In my opinion, Addisaba Ethiopian Restaurant is the best. It was suggested to my by the gent at Maru, which is a grocery that carries some ready to eat products like injera. The folks at Addisaba are very congenial, the prices low, and the food excellent. It all comes served on a "loaf" of injera, with three more folded loaves to finish the meal. The bread is like like a big tangy crepe. It is made of teff, the most nutrient rich grain. Tear off a 2x2 inch or so chunk, pinch up some food and into your mouth. They will bring flatware if requested. Take an adventuresome friend or two and order a meat and a veggie sampler plate. They have quite a few veggies that are cooked, and a green salad that is crunchy. Some of my favorites are the lentils and the carrot/potato dish. The meats are mostly wots(stews) and a few are tartar. The spice barbar is quite hot, so be wary if this will cause issues for you. The strip center is ho-hum and the regulars seem to come in late in the evening.
Second choice is Blue Nile, good food too, but not as varied in the flavors as Addisaba. As to Nazarath, the only time I stopped in there the woman seated me and responded that she didn't know what they had to serve, but whenever to woman who did the cooking might show up, I could order some food. I went by DesDes 3 times when they should have been open, but weren't, so no food rating there.
My first introduction to Ethopian was Queen of Sheba, a homey little place in the Bellaire/Renwick area that was "gentrified" away.

I would probably also try Addisaba thanks to the recommendations of the other chowhounders - or maybe anything but the Blue Nile? A friend of mine from Miami liked the Ethiopian restaurant there more (Sheba) than the Blue Nile - and Miami only has one Ethiopian restaurant! So I would recommend going elsewhere - you're lucky to have options!
I haven't made it to Addis Ababa yet but was nosing around at Maru. What is the big, round flat bread/cake? Not the crepe-like injera but the 1" thick more pancake or cornbread like stuff? Do you know what it is called and how it is used. Seemed to be kind of spring-y. I was chatting with the lady but forgot to ask.
