Barbecue in Houston

What's the best barbecue place in Houston? I saw that Chowhound has another thread with the same topic but it is 5 years old... so I thought an update is needed.

These are the places I'm considering but I have no idea how they compare with each other as I've never been to any of them. I'm willing to also consider other places, but I want to be "wowed."

- Burns
- Thelma's
- Williams Smokehouse
- Littles (Dickinson)

  1. Williams Smokehouse, especially for ribs. I'm down on Thelma's after a visit a couple of months ago that yielded mediocre Q.

You are aware Little's in Dickinson is only a trailer? I've looked for it twice and it was never where it was supposed to be.

Yeah, I saw an article (two or three years ago) in the Houston Chronicle (I think?) about Little's and I've had been wanting to go for a while... I guess Little's is no longer in business?

I've heard of several bad reviews for Thelma's as well. I think I should cross that off of my list. Have you been to Burns?

Haven't been to Burns in a couple of years and wasn't impressed but have heard lots of good things since -- maybe I should give it another try.

Do let me know if you get to try it before I do!

    2. Williams burnt down last night.

Really... wow. And I can't even find a news article in the Houston Chronicle about it online!

This is sad but unfortunately true. I took a drive over that way at lunch. The pit was destroyed as well as the back of the building. The sides and front look salvageable, there is just some smoke damage over the windows and doors; lots of furnishings in the parking lot looked okay at a glance, fixtures in the back parking lot look heavily damaged.

I hope he had insurance. With Wheatley just improved to 4-lane divided and a new entrance off Wheatley to his parking lot, so you didn't have to navigate that very narrow side street, he was poised for growth.

I heard it was electrical (don't see how as it was at/near the pits but maybe they had an outlet there?). Also heard it started at 4:00am; could be when they get there to fire up the pits?

Channel 13 just mentioned it and said Williams's is gone for good - Mr. Williams says he will not rebuild, he has no desire to go on in the restaurant business.

          3. Littles is usually in the Zeigler parking lot on FM 517 in Dickinson. Zeigler's is a locally owned small supermarket.

That's just an unlucky coincidence since I'm like THIS close to getting to Houston and trying out the BBQ. I do hope Williams change his mind sometime soon though. I guess Little's may be my best bet now?
