Chili help - now

I'm making the black bean chili recipe from the Southern Living Nov. issue. I'm the kind of person that pretty much needs to follow a recipe. It seems to lack what I think would be called "depth"? It's in the simmer stage. What do I do? And I did the veggie version. I try recipes to feed my veggie brother when he visits. Husband is probably going to order pizza.
