Starving in the Valley
Let me put in my 2 yens worth from here in Tokyo. I am always left with a feeling of ecstasy after any of my visits to Angel Lenas Soul Food Kitchen, 4515 Sepulveda Blvd, in Sherman Oaks (right around the corner from Tower Records). The smothered pork chops ( 2 moist chops, each about 1 1/2 inches thick) or fried catfish (2 big old fillets) are sure bets! All dinners,(about 10 different entrees are on the menu, if memory serves me correctly) come with 2 sides. The macaroni and cheese side is my favorite, since it has the crispy pan scrapings in it! Other sides include rice, mashed potato, greens, green beans, etc. And, the meals come with great corn bread muffins. The portions are HUGE, presented on a plate the size of a serving platter, but do try to save room for the warm peach cobbler, which is so out-of-this-world that I'm starting to wish I was there right now. Wash it all down with iced tea (served in Mason jars), and you won't be sorry about parting with $15.00
My favorite of all time in Calabasas is Gaetano's. It may be the most authentic Italian anywhere. Chef Mario is amazing. The decor is quaint and quite peaceful. I have been bringing discerning friends here for years and have only recieved raves. Make sure to order the "House Cappuccino" for dessert. Let me know what you think.
