Austin Cantina (SEA) - what's the word?
If anyone has tried Austin Cantina, the new Tex-Mex place on 24th in Ballard, I'd love to hear your impressions. I'm considering going there for a birthday dinner. Thanks!
I generally hate to post an opinion based on one visit, but I wasn't impressed with the food. Good service, cozy space, but my camerones were bland, my side of root veggies were very undercooked, and the mashed potatoes were undersalted (the gravy wasn't great, either). The pudding part of the banana pudding was tasty but there were so many Nilla wafers packed in there you had to chisel the stuff out of the cup. These kind of mistakes are so puzzling to me because it makes you wonder if they ever try their food. My friend did like her chicken fried steak so maybe they do other things (besides what I had) well.
I've been three times, but seem to have had the opposite experience. Thought the food was good. The brunch menu that they just started is great and the diabetic in me kept me from getting the pan fried corn bread with maple syrup, darnit.
The Chicken Fried Steak is definitely a highlight, and the new onion rings sound quite good too. I'd also reco the plantain empanadas.
My only wish is a less expensive sipping tequila. =)
How many people? The place is quite small. The food is nice but depends what you are looking for. I went there expecting a more upscale mexican place but it is a more laid back kinda joint. if casual is what your looking for then that's cool. The prices are not that cheap for what you get but the food is well seasoned. It is the kind of place i would drop by for lunch.
There's nothing particularly Austin or Tex-Mex about the food, but the vibe of the place is very Austin. I also just thought it was meh, but I think some of it relates to my expectations.
