Spago must-haves?

Though I've lived here several years, tonight is my first visit to Spago. Any must-have recommendations? Thanks.

      At times they won't offer the tasting menu on Friday and Saturday nights.

    2. I don't remember if the tasting menu also includes the various hors d'oeuvres that I like (especially the tuna cornets, and I think also there was some sort of blini with caviar, creme fraiche and dill).

      But yes, the tasting menu is the way to go. It's truffle season, too, so I expect a white truffle agnolotti to be part of the spread.

          I was actaully there for lunch yesterday and Wolfgang Puck was in town and there making his rounds. I hope that you had a yummy dinner.

            While Puck is the face of the operation, don't forget that it's Chef Lee Hefter in the kitchen.

          We did splurge on the tasting menu with wine pairings and I have to say, it was fabulous...and truffles were plentiful (on the angelotti and on an amuse bouche of brioche)...there were lots of little extras including the famous tuna tartar in the cone and a pear sorbet served with jasmine tea. Other courses included uni wrapped in scallop sashimi, a filet of venison and an amazing swordfish dish.
          The one issue we had was our initial service. Our waiter was horrible! I asked to speak with a sommelier and was told he "couldn't find him"...he started us off with champagne, and before our glasses were empty topped it off with A DIFFERENT kind of champagne. It was ridiculous. I finally asked the manager for a sommelier who spent the rest of the evening pouring our wines and explaining each one. Each of our tasting courses was served by a head waiter/manager who described each dish and we didn't see our initial waiter again until the bill came. I'm not sure if that's normally how it works, or if they knew he was falling apart on us, but once he was out of the picture, the service became top notch.

            did they tack on tip on your bill automatically? was there few years ago with my wife and i didn't notice that tip was i put another 20% on top of that! i know i should have paid more attention but i wish our waiter had mention something!
            so he ended up getting 40%+ tip!!

              Yes...they did tack the tip on. I don't know if it was 20% but I guess it must have been...

                I had a similar bad waiter experience there. It was clearly someone who was looking to move onto something else--like, hmm, acting. They replaced him for our table and comped our desserts.

                  We went this wednesday and had truly bad service. Managed to be fussy and inattentive at the same time. When Barbara Lazarus stopped by to "see how things were" (oddly, she waited til two people had gone to the ladies room) I told her the food was good but that I couldn't seem to get more bread despite asking for it twice. ...and hey look, there's the runner I asked about bread, delivering bread to some other table. My uncle was leaning on the table talking between courses and a runner tried to poke him out of the way to put the silverware down in the right place. Uncle not happy. They must comp a lot of desserts there, as we got them as well...but can't imagine ever going back. Crowded, loud and indifferent service. Food was good, but not extraordinary (though beautifully plated). Providence will be our fine dining splurge of choice. We ate there last night and it was all Spago was not. Truly excellent.

                      Our system is: Spago TM for Lunch and Providence TM for Dinner.
