Blacks
I am going to Blacks in Lockhart tomorrow. Any suggestions for what I should order? I am usually a pork rib girl...

I've been way too busy or I would have posted earlier. I'd say either place is fine, but I kind of prefer Black's. I think they have the best sausage of any of the Lockhard barbeque places - try the garlic or jalapeno sausage. And, they also so a really nice pork loin.

Since I didnt hear from you all in time, we decided to go to all three!
Smitty's was first- ribs were really thick and not smoked all of the way through- or at least not enough for my taste. Brisket was amazing and far and away the best. crispy on the outside and fatty moist on the inside. Crowd was very family oriented- seemed like everyone finished with some Bluebell.
Blacks was my DH's first choice. I thought that the ribs were dry ( that is only a relative comment since I agree that they were better than anything that I have had in Austin). Brisket was ok. Not sure why we bothered with sides- I love cole slaw but this had sugar in it. Place was filled with blue haired ladies.
Kreuz's ribs were my hands down favorites. Covered in pepper. My DH appreciated how well prepared they were, but didn't like the pepper. Lemonade tasted like soap. We also tried some ham which was not up to the ribs. I was a little put off by the guys cutting the meat. They seemed to be less into working and more into each other. Minor detail.
I would do it all over again in a heart beat, though I was overwhelmed by the salt content at each place. Next time I will try sausages and I am curious about the turkey at Kreuz's...-

Interesting, I've never seen ham at Kreuz's but its been a while. One thing though, that wouldn't have been the 2 inch thick BBQ pork chop, would it? If not, *that's* what you wanna try at Kreuz's if its not sold out. You're right about the high salt content, and I should say just don't bother getting sides at any of these places, just get something to drink (for the salt).

Due to this overwhelming show of support for Blacks, we are going to SMitty's. Now, any suggestions for Smitty's?

re: carfreeinla
Both places rock--when you go to Blacks, just *don't bother with any of the sides*. That goes for all the BBQ places in Lockhart. For Blacks definitely get the brisket, also if they have pork ribs, definitely go for that. Blacks used to have the best sausage I'd ever eaten in the Western Hemisphere, their Jalapeno sausage, but now they've made it safe for white people and added something that tastes like processed cheese to it.
Smitty's--is there anything there not good? The sausage is ok, so don't bother with that. I recommend trying both the fatty and dry brisket. Sometimes they have prime rib.
Anyhow, both places are world class BBQ, along with Kreuz's. Chisholm Trail is a distant 4th, but despite that, is way better than most of the BBQ places in Austin. I used to really like their ribs, but haven't been there in years.
If you do go to Kreuz's, btw, definitely get the thick BBQ pork chop--if it hasn't sold out yet. Yeah, that's one cautionary word--these three places are so popular, they often run out of stuff by mid lunch rush hour.
