My favorite fast food breakfast is at

Chick Fil-A made me appreciate poultry in the morning.
Jack in the Box shocked me with the Ciabatta bread in their brekkie sandwich.
I've got a terrible weakness for Taco Bell and Del Taco mornings.
Just tried the spinach and feta wrap at Starbucks. Loved it.

What do you crave for the most important meal of the day? (no beverages, please. I'm talking sustenance)

  1. There's something to be said about the bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle sandwich from McDonald's. Mostly along the lines of, "Good GOD that's delicious."

I agree, though I prefer the sausage. Mmmm, fat, sweet, salty...so terrible for you and yet so tasty.

      1. re: SungSook

I agree the Bacon egg and cheese McGriddle is awesome! I'm so lucky that I rarely crave anything greasy in the AM. I'm a fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, cereal in the AM kind of girl. And then of course I crave heavier food in the PM.

But when I am in the mood, the McGriddle is irreplaceable!

      2. Chick-Fil-A chicken or bacon biscuit
McD's breakfast burrito (the small sausage and cheese one, not the giant one they recently introduced) or the sausage biscuit with grape jelly
        Hardees sausage and gravy biscuit

        1. I agree with those small breakfast burritos at McDonald's. And they're only $1. My son loves the bacon, egg and cheese McGriddle. I've not tried it. They used to have a decent egg, bacon and cheese bagel, but they took it off the menu.

I'll admit to liking McGriddles, but I much prefer Carl's Jr breakfast offerings. The breakfast burger flat out rocks, the breakfast club is another winner and the burritos are good too.

And I nominate Burger King for the absolute nastiest breakfast offerings. Only the Cheesy Tots are worth it.

          2. Carl's Jr Breakfast Burger.

All flavors in one bite: Burger, cheese, bacon, egg, tots, ketchup, sesame seed bun.

            1. McDonald's: Sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin and a cup of coffee (it's sustenance, trust me). Every so often, just a classic Egg McMuffin.

(The sausage isn't so good for you, but since we've already got one "but it'll kill you" post, I'll note that a regular egg mcmuffin has 300 calories...granted 110 from fat, but also loaded wiht protein. If you eat one once in a while, it won't kill you either. Just be sure to skip the hashbrowns!)

That is why I don't eat an egg mcmuffin daily or even weekly. On occasion I think it is fine.

Personally I like Whataburger's biscuits and gravy.

                1. re: Kari

Why, because it has 300 calories? As far as fast food breakfasts go, it's darn near virtuous. A single biscuit and gravy at Whataburger is 530 calories, 300 of them from fat. Since you're saying biscuits in plural...

                    1. re: JK Grence the Cosmic Jester

Well I don't eat them often either LOL, maybe once a year? I just find them good and you always say biscuits and gravy in plural! (but I can only eat one biscuit.)

                  1. re: ccbweb

being laid off currently, the Mickey D's 2 for $3 Sausage McM w/egg special is even more of a favorite. although, as stated in some egg thread elsewhere on Chowhound, I'm fond of adding a little Sriracha...mmm spicy!

                  2. for fast food always found the golden arches to be the best. not a huge egg fan but the sausage biscuit (w/out egg) is good, and I'm always surprised at how good McD's pancakes are, and such a bargain compared to pancake chains. But why do they give you two pats of butter for 3 pancakes?

                    1. re: KaimukiMan

McDonald's has really tasty sausage, very nicely spiced. Much better than any other fast food place. I can't stand their pancakes, though. Too obviously frozen before cooking.

                      1. re: aynrandgirl

I can hardly stand McD's biscuits. To me, they are floury and gummy. Rarely are they baked enough, resulting in the absence of any crust, which IMHO, is the primary virtue of a good biscuit. I'll take Hardee's, Popeye's or KFC over those anytime

                      2. re: KaimukiMan

For my breakfast sin I love either McD or BK egg and cheese biscuit. No meat.

The weird thing is I like to put mustard on it. And have a diet soda along with it. When I work at a place with a cafeteria I squirrel away little mustard packets in my cube and eat it there so nobody is horrified. Otherwise I take it home.

                        1. re: KaimukiMan

Exactly! And sometimes 2 syrups also.

                        2. Two double chocolate glazed donuts from Dunkin Donuts with a black coffee. :)

                          1. While it's not drive-thru fast, Waffle House has the best chain breakfast in the world, IMO, and they are pretty speedy. Scattered, smothered and covered. Mmmmmmm. I wish they had Waffle House in California. As for drive-thrus McDonalds has really slipped in food quality lately. The biscuits are hard and old. Yuk. Jack in the Box has some really tasty biscuits, and the croissant sandwich is really good settle-the-stomach comfort food anytime day or night.

                            1. the biscuits at Hardee's are the best chain breadstuff going. When I can find a franchise that has them with the boneless porkchops or chicken filets I get 2 with egg. those are just decadent and blow my entire caloric intake for the whole day, but it's worth it to me.

                              1. Has anyone tried the McSkillet Burrito?

No. It looks like one of those things that if someone else were making the exact same thing it would be pretty good though.

                                  1. re: stony

Not so good. I tried one because I like the their original bfast burritos. The sausage patty was pretty greasy and overwhelming, the potatoes were pretty tasteless. As Velvet Elvis mentioned, it seems like a good idea but they just don't execute it very well -- maybe poor ingredient ratios?

                                  2. For those in the Mid-Atlantic region, go to Sheetz, get a made to order sausage biscuit with double egg, pepper jack cheese, and butter. Or get two. A great sandwich.

                                    1. have to admit to an EggMcMuffin this morning (without the sausage) and a coffee. Just realised they forgot the hash browns but that was a good thing.

                                      1. Number one at McDonalds. (egg mcmuffin, hash browns, coffee). So shoot me. In my defense, it is the only thing I will ever eat at McD's, and I only have it once every two months or so.

There are several things about JITB that I truly love (their TV ads, their tacos....) but ciabatta bread? in the morning no less? I don't know about that...

That's the only thing I'd eat at McDonalds too (minus the coffee) until recently when I against my better judgement tried a bite of a sausage mcgriddle and actually liked it.

I'm usually a bacon person rather than sausage so I tried the mcgriddle with bacon once it and it was just nasty. But something about sausage works with the rest of the flavors.

                                        2. I must say that the breakfast ciabatta at Jack in the Box is quite good for a fast food item. The bread is excellent and the sauce is fine. You can argue about the quality of the ham and the bacon, but it's cheap fast food and overall it's a very tasty meal.

                                          1. My guilty pleasure for breakfast... McD's sausage biscuit with egg and a hashbrown.
I also loooove waffle house... fried eggs, sausage or bacon (well done please) grits, toast, YUM. good thing there aren't any here in Philly! ;-)

                                            1. As a person who doesn't like eggs, McD's is #1 hands down. I can get 3 different types of sandwiches without having to special order, apple slices if I want a fruit, and the coffee is decent.

not sure if it counts as "fast food" but Manhattan Bagel is also a favorite spot.

Mcd's doesn't even reach my top 3. I live in Nashville, and down here I have to go with a chicken biscuit from chick-fil-a, steak, chicken or porkchop biscuit from hardee's, or a steak and gravy biscuit from Mrs. Winner's; and yes, i will have hashbrowns with that, thank you very much

                                              2. The pickings are mighty slim mornings on my way to work. I generally don't like Taco Johns food, but found their breakfast scrambler burrito really pretty decent. It's full of green peppers and tomatoes along with scrambled eggs and sausage. I was surprised.

                                                1. Hardees. Steak biscuit with a side of gravy for dipping.
Or, if I feel like eating in, biscuits and gravy ( it's hard to eat B&G in a moving vehicle)
We're setting out this week for a Southern road trip and I have the mornings planned around Hardees locations. For some reason the ones near me in Orlando are lousy - poor service and dry biscuits.
Irony - Hardeeville SC does not have a Hardees right off I-95.

eimac: Years ago IIRC Hardeeville did indeed have a Hardees. That would have been before the Hardees chain went in the dumper following its ill-fated acquisition of Roy Rogers and almost killing two venerable regional chains. In the case of Roys it took a few incredibly loyal franchisees to save the name.

                                                    1. re: Bob W

Is that why you see so many Hardees boarded up plus the quality is so inconsistent?

                                                  2. My guilty pleasure is sausage and cheese on a biscuit and hash browns from McDonald's. They used to give you two hash browns in an order, though!

                                                    1. I rarely eat fast food but if I'm craving something, it's either a McDonald's sausage McMuffin, no egg (I get one like once a quarter) or a Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit (even less often since there's not one near me). The last CFA breakfast I had while traveling a couple of months ago seemed to not have the quality they had in the past. I don't know if it was the location or if it's a chain trend - I suppose I'll try again in another few months...

where do you find these. they dont seem to have them in colorado any more. they are the best though!

                                                      2. I have got to give my vote to McDonalds steak, egg and cheese bagel. Totally greasy and tons of calories I am sure, but IMO the BEST fast food breakfast offering of any of the chains!!!!!!! Yummy!!

                                                        1. My vote goes to Hardee's. I am in love with the biscuits (fluffy inside and a crunch on the outside...so great!) and it's a great memory from childhood. On Saturdays, dad and I would go and get steak biscuits for breakfast.

                                                          1. McDonalds without a doubt. I love thier breakfast. Love the fake steak bagel, and of course the good old Egg McMuffin is an American icon. McGriddles are also a tasty treat.

                                                            1. Since there are very few Denny's in Canada, I enjoy their grand slam when I'm in the US; eggs, bacon, sausage, toast - how can you screw that up? Another place I've often enjoyed (for breakfast only!) is Bob Evan's. A little heavy, perhaps, but their home fries are good, and again, how do you mess up eggs, sausage, and bacon?

I once saw a gig by a British band called Tender Trap. Their singer, Amelia Fletcher (formerly of Talulah Gosh and Heavenly, two of my favorite bands of all time) announced between songs at one point that they were going to be in the states for six days and that she had insisted that they eat at Denny's at least twice a day every day so that she could get her fill of Grand Slams before she had to go back to England.

Me, I'm all about the sausage biscuit from McDonald's.

                                                              2. I totally dig on Mcd's pancakes when they do them right. Pretty sure they are one of the brands you can buy in frozen section a grocery store, although I forgot which brand it was (pillsbury, aunt jemima, or one of those) My second fave is also from mcd's the previously mentioned steak bagel - they discontinued by favorite before that - the mexican omelet bagle. YUMMMM!

                                                                1. I adore the Whataburger "taquitos" (aka breakfast burritos). They are incredibly fresh tasting for a fast food chain and head and shoulders above McD's.

I also have a weakness for the Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit.

McD's new burritos (the skillet ones) are better than the old burritos, IMO. If I am at the airport or some other place where that's all I can find, I also enjoy their Egg McMuffins.

                                                                  1. I just tried Sonic's Steak, Egg, and Bacon breakfast burrito. Yummy!

                                                                      1. i still like the Egg McMuffin (minus meat) however, i can't remember the last time i tried one....tried the mcgriddle once cuz a co worker got breakfast for everyone..it was ok....maybe more ok if you were eating it with sausage or something, dunno...i don't eat meat.

For anyone in Canada (or i think, Portland, ME)......Tim Horton's breakfast sandwich is good. Is egg and cheese on any kind of bread..ever a bad thing?

Not just Portland.. Buffalo, NY area, and now extending into Michigan. I think Tim's has adopted an "incremental" expansion approach; they expand along routes and locations where they will get a fair amount of Canadian traffic, and then let the locals 'discover' them. Coming back from Chicago, we dropped in on a location off I-94 in Michigan around 11:00 pm, and it was quite busy; we were the only Canadian plates in the lot.

                                                                        2. If you are fortunate enough to live near a White Castle, their breakfast sandwiches are excellent. Sausage, egg and cheese on a bun (usually about 4 of them) does the trick. The hash browns are way to greasy, but do have a fun school cafeteria flavor to them. They offer breakfast sandwiches on toast, also, but stick with the bun. Next time, I think I'm going to ask if I can get the burger onions on my breakfast sandwich. Crazy, I know.

                                                                          1. I like Subways breakfast. They have different omelette varieties and breakfast meats available, but I like just the basic egg sandwich with a little bit of lettuce, tomato, and light mayo. My brother stops at Subway nearly everyday on his way to school and gets either a ham and egg sandwich or bacon, egg, and cheese.
When i was younger, and blissfully unaware of nutrition information, I loved McD's breakfast burritos with picante sauce and sausage biscuits. Now I find I have a hard time enjoying them as much because rather than enjoying the taste, I tend to distractedly muse on exactly what part of my thigh they will settle into, haha.

I'll admit I never get this because of the calories, BUT... Bojangles' (southern chain) chicken biscuit, with a side of hashbrowns, all dipped in ketchup. And a Fanta cherry soda to drink. I haven't eaten this combo in probably 7 years... but it's awesome.

                                                                            2. We usually do a driving vacation from Ohio to North or South Carolina beaches every summer. We pass through West Virginia on country roads. The anticipation of breakfast at Tudor's Biscuit World (50 locations) is very exciting. We often leave our home at 3 or 4 a.m. to beat traffic and get in our 14 hours of driving. The egg, sausage/bacon breakfast biscuit with coffee tastes really, really good when we reach that first location in Charleston, WV at 5 or 6 a.m. How much of that is vacation anticipation knowing we are on our way, I am not really sure. I just know it is a ritual our family looks forward to.

                                                                              1. mc donald's egg and cheese mcmuffin and home fries, when hot, is very good.
bojangle's chicken and biscuit or chicken filet on a bun with lett, tom, and mayo, also a nice breakfast sandwich.

                                                                                1. Not that I have anything against FF breakfasts (I still think the Sausage McMuffin with Egg is the best product McD's makes), but seriously - is there much better than a breakfast of eggs, some kind of pork, decent toast (i.e. not the white plastic that passes for bread in much of North America), and finally - real home fries? Those are spuds that are not made from a bag or dropped in a deep fryer - actual boiled potatoes, a day old, fried up on a griddle with a little bit of onion (some places add a little bit of green or red pepper, or bacon, all of which are interesting variations).

And, being Canadian, I love to add a little HP Sauce. For my American friends, it's a thicker, zestier version of A-1. After you try it, ketchup just won't do it any more.

Good, good, good point. I'd add some grits to that list as well (I like a big breakfast). Has to be wheat toast, too, but not (for me) something multi grain or otherwise dense. Eggs over easy, sausage, wheat toast, coffee, home fries and grits. Yes, please.

                                                                                  2. I'm on board with the McGriddles and a chicken biscuit from Chick Fil A, with honey.

                                                                                    1. I live near Hartford, CT and we seriously are lacking in a variety of Fast Food for breakfast. We don't have Chik-Fil-A, Sonic--we do have: McD's, Burger King and way too many Dunkin Donuts. My personal preference (as a big breakfast fan) is to get a scrambled egg and cheese on a roll from any little non-chainy joint but if I can't accomodate that and need something fast---the McD's chicken biscuit is suprisingly nummy.
I loathe McD's other breakfast sandwiches-their fried egg shaped as a hockey puck, no thanks. The scrambled eggs all folded up on a biscuit...gross.

                                                                                      1. I'm not a big fan of eggs, which severely limits my fast-food breakfast choices. My hands down favorite is a box of Chick-n-minis from Chick-fil-a. They're bite size yeast rolls with chicken nuggets tucked inside to make mini-sandwiches. They are my only road-trip food request, and trips that start on a Sunday morning are so disappointing without them. Now that I think about it, I do have a 9am flight on Monday, and pass Chick-fil-a on the way to the airport... mmmm....

                                                                                        1. OK, this was a baaaaad thread to read when I was hungry right before lunch, knowing most fast food places were no longer serving breakfast!

I went home and made myself a bacon, egg, and cheese burrito for lunch to make up for it.

                                                                                          1. McD regular breakfast burritos--open them up, dump in the salsa and some black pepper, refold and enjoy.... favorite road breakfast.

                                                                                            1. I worked at BK many years ago, and working breakfast/lunch shift was an eye-opening experience. The first thing we did was to dump a HUGE vat of thick white lard into the fryers.

It seemed like everything got fried. The french toast sticks. The fries. The nuggets. The chicken patties. And if it wasn't dipped in lard, it was about as nutritious as lard, anyway. I mean breakfast sandwiches with eggs, a giant thick slice of sausage plus cheese and bacon.

It took years and years and years for me to actually eat at that place again, and I finally stopped when I came to my senses.

If you're eating breakfast at a chain, you might as well just inject your veins with pure fat.

Some of the items. The Egg McMuffin, though, is 300 calories and 18 grams of protein. Yes, it has 12 grams of fat and 5 grams of that is saturated, but about half of that is from the egg and both of those are workable if you're making decent food choices generally speaking. Hotckaes only have 9 grams of fat. There are some reasonable options out there, if one picks and chooses. Breakfast anywhere in the US tends to be a pretty fat laden meal. Eggs, bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, buttered toast and so on. Chain or not, one has to be careful.

Was it lard or shortening at Burger King? (No idea how long ago you worked there.)

I think everyone should have an opportunity to work at a fast food restaurant at some point in their lives, if only for an hour. I think it would lead to better eating choices, if only to avoid the fast food restaurant they worked at!

                                                                                              2. I really liked Hardee's pork chop and country gravy biscuit. It was available for a limited time, but was totally yummy. And I admit, I really like the sausage egg and cheese McGriddles from McDonalds.

                                                                                                  1. re: spellweaver16

                                                                                                2. Have to agree with Bob W way up there...While Sheetz is not convenient for me, another local gas station/market has a deee-licious steak-egg-cheese biscuit that I could eat everyday. I have found throughout my travels that one of the best ways to break the fast is at a mom-and-pop gas-all, even if they’re not as reliable as a chain.

When I have the chance, I love to get their sausage and egg biscuit (no cheese, please!). Seriously tasty! Alas, the closest ones are ~40 mins away, so I don't get that many chances.

Locally, we have Wawa. Since they pre-blend cheese in their eggs, they're not even an option for breakfast sandwiches.

                                                                                                    1. re: brandywiner
