Upscale Pre-Theatre-Pre-Fixe or Bar-Lounge Dining

Hey everyone! long time listener first time caller here...

I am looking for a place to have dinner before seeing the Christmas Show at Radio City. Since we are spending a lot of money for the trip and going to Eleven Madison Park for brunch, my girlfriend and I decided that we would scale back a bit on dinner. I would say our budget is about $100-$150 including tip.

That being said I am tyring to find an "upscale" place that has a good Prix-Fixe or a restaurant where we can sit and get some apps in their lounge/bar area. This would really be my preferred choice since we arent big desert people. Id love to be able to go somewhere like BLT Steak and just get apps but I dont think that would fly.

A couple I have heard tossed around are Thalia and District. Are these a place you would choose to go for a nice night out?

Thanks for the help

  1. A few come to mind-Insieme-you can pretty much order as much or as little as you want-I've done an "appetizer" and a "middle course" and been happy.
Or the Bar Room at the Modern-once again, you can order whatever you want...

I can't say I cared much for either Thalia or District.

    1. Try Marseille--close to the theatre district, and the food is very good.

I like Marseille also but would encourage you to check out these places as well:

Etcetera Etcetera (and possibly it's sister restaurant Vice Versa). Very good food that isn't cookie cutter, a lot of their dishes are offered in app size. Price is perfect for what you are budgeting. Smaller places with wonderful, personal service.

SEVEN - near MSG on 7th Ave. Small plates sort of place. Very metropolitan.

I like Marseille, too, but at 44th and 9th, it's a schlep to the Music Hall. I'll second Vice Versa. It's on 51st, between 8th and 9th, which is convenient, and offers good contemporary Italian cuisine in a very pleasant setting. Nice bar up front, too. You can check them out at

325 West 51st Street, New York, NY 10019

      2. If it's a show at Radio City, I don't think one needs to go all the way to the Theatre District for dinner. The Bar Room at the Modern seems like a perfect place for drinks and small plates without travelling too far from your final destination.
