One of the most underrated cheap eats places is Kabob Restaurant and Deli on Rockville Pike next to Joe's Noodle. Of all the kabob joints, it's probably the most authentic and pleasant. At dinner on weekends, the place is usually filled with Iranians. There are a dozen kabobs, along with Persian salads, sandwiches and desserts I have not seen elsewhere in this region. It's got the best kabob and hummus in the burbs. That ultra-long-grained dry Persian rice is also served, with a saffron or saffron-like drizzle. If you're hankering for a tongue or calf's brain sandwich, this is your place (though I'll pass). Next door is the deli, with produce, dried fruits, nuts, pastry, spices, frozen foods, real halvah, etc.

Are you talking about Yekta Restaurant? It's next to Joe's Noodle and it has great food. The Chelow Kabab and the chicken kababs are juicy and flavorful. There are also daily specials.

Mmmmmm....poached seasoned calf brain sandwich...

Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out. I currently travel all the way to Clarendon, VA from College Park for a proper kabob - this is much closer.
