Going to make some foodie gift baskets for the holidays. Where do you like to shop for this kind of stuff?

What a yummy idea! I do this, too. Friends and family have plenty of "stuff," but everyone can use consumables.
I've been very happy with these purveyors:
Balducci's in Ridgefield, at 21 Governor Street, www.balduccis.com
Zeytinia in Wilton, at 14 Danbury Road, the east side of Rte. 7, same shopping plaza as Outback Steakhouse.
Trader Joe's in Darien, at 436 Post Road, the south side of Route 1, same shopping plaza as Orvis.
Another Trader Joe's in Westport, at 400 Post Road E, on the south side of Rte 1.
Penzey's in Norwalk, at 197 Westport Avenue, the north side of Route 1, east of Stew Leonard's -- this place sells outstanding individual and mixed spices, including boxed collections if you have gifts to mail.

I've also found some fun stuff for foodie baskets at the Scandinavian shop on High Street in Norwalk, which is just about 1.5 miles south of Stew Leonard's on Rte. 1--turn at the VFW hall.
The things that have been favorites of the giftees have either come from Penzey's or Trader Joe's, but I'd love it (personally) if someone went to Zeytinia for me.

What's Zeytinia? Never heard of it!

Zeytinia is a small local chain (4 stores) of gourmet groceries. The Wilton location is pretty easy to miss.

Neat store and yes it is easy to miss. It is in the strip mall with Outback and Borders just past Walmart. Nice vegetables and very reasonable meats.

jfood started buying his fruits and veggies at Greenwich produce about a mile into NY on 123 in Vista. The quality is much better than many stores and he can find lots of different varieties of mushrooms for his risotto. They also sell Kate's Butter from Maine which jfood loves.

Where exactly is this place? I wonder if it is the same Greenwich Produce that used to be on Greenwich Ave. It closed down about 2 years ago. IT was my favorite place because of the quality of the produce the selection of good asian produce and the very reasonable price...

Same place bro, and jfood used to wonder the the greenwich ave store at lunch time from stm.

Firections from the merritt - it is exit 38 route 123. Head north all the way through New Canaan and into NY. About 1 1/2 miles on the left just past the Getty Station there is a strip mall with a deli (and here's a secret, the bagels there are actually edible and the only ones in CT that jfood eats), two liquor stores, a pharmacy, the post office, a chinese take-away and smack dab in the middle is Greenwich Produce. Same ladies from Greenwich Ave.

Macoun apples were 149 last night and food emporium were 249. And they have Chiquita bananas, better than the Bonita stuff the grocers carry.Jfood told mrs jfood that if he ever says he's going to Stew's for veggies/fruit to hit him.

              Glad to help A.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Now I just need to figure out a reason why I need to be way up there... thinking, thinking...

Too bad they didn't resurface somewhere closer, like Stamford. Oh well, at least they resurfaced. I love their selection of asian produce.

it's on the way to Chez Leonards? Is that reason enough?

Not for me it isn't... I just head straight up 95 from Stamford to Norwalk.

                    Still thinking....

                    :)

chez leonard is the hot dog guy in Ridgefield, not Steweys Leonard. chez leonards is top 5 hot dogs in the neighborhood.

ahhh... OK, now I have a reason. My daughters love hot dogs.

                        Done. Thanks!

They sell Kate's Butter at the Shaw's in New Fairfield. It's my new favorite.

My father-in-law buys imported butter from Portugal called Primor. It used to be great, but they must have changed the recipe.

I now have a bar of Kate's on the counter at all times.

              Hey everyone,
              Thanks for all the recos!
WendyB - I totally forgot about Penzey's! Good call.
jfood - Thanks for the heads up on Greenwich produce. Just a shot up 123, not too far from home!

ps - A couple of my favorite "gourmet" grocers are Village Market & Palmers. They both have specialty items you can't really find anywhere else! Not sure they totally qualify as "gourmet" but I thought I'd share :)

I agree with the others, but I'd like to add The Pantry in Fairfield. It's surprisingly good, but small, in a bad spot for parking---across from Chef's Table and Rite Aid; in the same strip mall as Tuesday Morning.

The pantry is good. I haven't been there a lot, but remember a great green olive dip. My SIL got a delicious butternut squash ravioli for Thanksgiving from there as well. I've been meaning to back and check it out further!
