Pearl Sugar in Los Angeles?

  • 8

Does anyone know where I can find Belgian Pearl Sugar in Los Angeles. I am making my French friend's cookie recipe and it calls for pearl sugar. Apparently confectioner's sugar won't do the trick.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know! Thank you!

  1. Call Surfas in Culver City:

    310-559-4770 or Toll Free at 1(866) 799-4770

    1. Pearl sugar is very different from confectioner's sugar -- it's sugar that comes in small, pearly lumps and is used for decorative purposes, and confectinoer's sugar definitely wont' do the trick. I've always mail-ordered mine from King Arthur Flour, but I suspect Surfas will carry it, and possibly Nicole's in South Pasadena (her website says she carries "coarse sugar grains," which may indeed by pearl sugar).

      1. I found some at the Ikea in Burbank - the box says it's Swedish pearl sugar, but I assume it's the same thing..

        1. I'm just confirming that Surfas carry it. I was there the weekend before Thanksgiving and saw them in Surfas plastic containers. Not confectioner's sugar, but little balls of pearl sugar that Belgians put in gaufre de Liege.

          1. Ikea has it in Burbank.

Olson's Scandinavian Deli on Pico and...Hauser(?) 5660 Pico Blvd has it. Olson's has somewhat short hours and is not open every day, but it's a great shop, clean and very friendly.

            1. I was just at Surfas also looking for pearl sugar for a cookie recipe. I only saw plastic bags with chunks of pearl sugar. They did not have the Swedish-style little sprinkle grains. I'll try IKEA tomorrow.

I tried IKEA Carson but they don't carry pearl sugar anymore. No luck at Bristol Farms, Cost Plus Market, or Sur la Table. I found them today at Olson's Scandinavian Deli, (which is open 10-4pm), so I can finish my X-mas cookies tonight.

I know this might be a little late for the recipe you had in mind but surfas carries both Belgian and swedish pearl sugars
