Bagelette---still best bagels in Queens?

We'll be heading out to NY (from Peoria, IL!) in a couple of weeks for our annual visit wth my parents. Bagelette has, in the past, bagels that most taste like the bagels I remember from when I lived near there 25 years ago. Last year we got them and they were good---but not great. Is there someplace else that now has REAL New York water bagels---tough, chewy and flavorful---preferably within a mile or two of Bagelette? Thanks!

  1. I am not familiar with Bagelette, but I have always loved the bagels at Utopia Bagels in Queens. There is frequently a line out the door, so I must not be the only one.

    1. I am not familiar with Bagelette, but googled it and came up with a place on 63rd Drive, just to see where the place is, before I suggest any others. Bagel Oasis, at 183-15 Horace Harding Expressway, Fresh Meadows (eastbound LIE service road) is great and one of the few places still open 24/7. (www.bageloasis.com). They are probably about 10 minutes or so from Bagelette, on the LIE. A bit closer to Bagelette is Gotta Getta Bagel on Continental Avenue, just off Queens Boulevard, in Forest Hills. Also, though I have not tried it, there is also Hot Bialys (they do have bagels, despite the name), at 116-63, Queens Boulevard, in Forest Hills, near Union Turnpike, which I hear is supposed to be good. Enjoy your bagel hunt.

I live for those bagels at Utopia. I think they are better than Bagel Oasis, too, even though B.O. gets all the press. Living in Boston now, where there is a serious dearth of good bagel places, I think back on the unmatched Everything bagels at Utopia and become very wistful... haha. Great "flagels" too.

Okay, so I will have to put Utopia Bagels on my radar. Bagel Oasis is right on my path to various family members' homes. I can probably re-route to try this place.

You should reroute to try Utopia Bagels on Utopia Pkwy at 20 Ave in Whitestone! I moved from there in 1994 and haven't been back, but for ten or so years I brought Utopia bagels into work on the weekends. Everyone, including my many Jewish coworkers thought they were top notch, and I worked with a lot of people from all over the NY area who grew up eating bagels.

        2. Utopia Bagels are the best. I kind of miss the old run-down atmosphere since the renovation- it looks a lot nicer and cleaner now.

          1. Gotta Getta Bagel is my favorite bagel in Queens. It's on 71st Ave. between Queens Blvd. and Austin Street-not that far away. I used to live by Bagelette and thought there bagels were pretty bad.

I like the bagels at GGB (though I consider them just a hair below Bagel Oasis) and they have a lot of good choices for spreads. Their danish used to be as good as any "old style" bakery, but a year or two ago, I noticed a change (for the worse) in taste. That does not stop me for going there for bagels, though. Their prices are a little higher than some other places, but given the price of real estate in Forest Hills, compared with Rego Park or Fresh Meadows, I am not surprised. I still vow to try Utopia Bagels...

I don't know about Queens, but Bagelette certainly has the best bagels in the Rego Park/Forest Hills area.
