where to purchase oysters?

Anyone know of a good place to purchase oysters besides going to the farms up north? Anyone know prices?

Sun Fat Seafood Co on Mission at 23rd in SF has a good selection, maybe 6 types from .65 to 1.25. Make sure to pick through them for open ones though, i've seen more then one dead oyster for sale.

You can get Hogg Islands at SF Ferry Plaza. One time when we were buying oysters at the place going towards Point Reyes (Johnson's Oyster Co, I think) they told us that you could pre-order them and then pick them up at the Oakland Lakeshore/Grand Farmer's market.

Johnson's is now Drakes Bay Oysters, and as of last weekend, no oysters for sale due to the oil spill. Otherwise, they'd be for sale at the Santa rosa farmers market on Saturday mornings.

I believe there's an oyster vendor at the Alemany farmers market on Saturday morning. Anyone confirm that?

Just to fill this out, Hog Island has a permanent restaurant at the Ferry Plaza, and they they have a stand at the Saturday market where you can buy oysters by the dozen to shuck on your own. I imagine the stand is cheaper, but I don't actually know one way or the other. If you want just their usual selection, no need to special order--just get there early. If you want extra large, or to wheedle and plead for Olympias, call them.

years ago, a friend of mine bought bushels of fabulous oysters at fishermans wharf, in shed b, near pier 39. they were abundant and cheap, and wonderful. he had to arrive very early. i can't recall all the details. does anyone know the scoop?
