Pho: Where to eat it?

Hello hounds,

I'm cravin me some good pho. Where do y'all recommend? Places to frequent? Others to stay away from? I'm not that fussy about neighborhood, but somewhere downtown (i.e. south of 14th street) is more convenient for me.

  1. Cong Ly has the best pho in Manhattan but the last few visits have been a little bit of let down on the quality of the beef in the soup. It's been fattier than I'd like but the broth is still sublime.

I second Cong Ly. Tried other places recommended on chow but Cong Ly won hands down. Most flavorful soup, best noodles and meatballs.

HOWEVER, be forewarned. Last time I went, I found a bug leg in my soup. I don't think it came from the kitchen b/c there was a pile of dead insect body parts lying on the wall paneling next to where I was sitting. It's more than likely that drafts of air could have carried the leg onto my pho, or I could have brushed up against the wall.

Regardless of how it happened, I'd go back to Cong Ly any day and brave the chance of another leg in my pho. Cause their pho is just that good!

    2. To all you Cong Ly enthusiasts, is there a particular pho that stands out on their menu? I went once and was disappointed, but I don't know much about pho and probably ordered the wrong thing.

      1. Stupid question...after ordering Pho at Cong Ly, I was brought a small plate of sprouts and lettuce with a lemon wedge.

Is this intended to be eaten as a salad or is it meant to to be added to your Pho once it's served?

Had the seafood with egg noodles by the way...very tasty and healthy!

It is meant to be added to the soup!
