I finally made it over to a new little gourmet Italian deli that just opened up in Sierra Madre. I had not heard a thing about it and had no idea what to expect but I had 20 minutes to grab lunch and thought I'd swing by and see what happened.

My first thought when I walked in was that I was in heaven. It's an adorable little shop mostly made up of a deli counter with gorgeous desserts (individual creme brulee, fruit tarts, brownies) a nice selection of high end cheeses and meats (sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't catch many names) and a beautiful selection of salads and veggies. Along the back wall are all sorts of items like San Marzano tomatoes, cured, vacuum sealed black and green olives and pestos. There's an espresso machine on the counter. The employees and owner were very friendly and welcoming which was a nice touch.

I only had a few minutes so I grabbed a menu and skimmed it and settled on a San Sebastian sandwich (prosciutto, manchego, roasted peppers and olive oil - hold the capers). I was offered a choice of bread and chose the rosemary ciabatta.

Within five minutes I had my sandwich and was on my way. I have to admit at this point I was noticing the bag was a bit on the light side and I had just spent $9.00... but when I got back to my desk and took a bite - oh....wow. This was an excellent sandwich!!! The bread was fabulous, light, soft, with a bit of chew. The herb flavor was terrific. The prosciutto and manchego were both fantastic and, although the peppers were green instead of red, they were also excellent and really set off the sandwich. Again, the price was more than I expected but, I have to admit I spent the next 20 minutes slowly savoring every single bite and realizing I was going to be back there before the weekend.

I'm thinking tomorrow I need to bring friends so I can try more than one item - anyone want to go? :-)
