The older sister of the owner of Pho 79 has opened her won restaurant in San Gabriel:

980 E Las Tunas Dr
(626) 287-3158

Supposedly, she is using the same recipes as the ones in Pho 79. Generally, the pho tai is pretty good, although the first time was a bit of a disaster. Perhaps it was because that was just after they opened.

Anyhow, the food is good. The entertainment is questionable. On one of the widescreen TV's, they were showing a Bee Gees reunion concert. Eating pho while listening to "Staying Alive" somehow doesn't quite match. Who knows? Maybe pho tastes better when you're decked out in 70's vintage polyester....

I'm with ya, kid...though pots of plastic "plants" that haven't been dusted since 1985 aren't much of a decor, either. Between the tired appointments and the lackadaisical service, I keep expecting to find some reason not to like Pho 79, but the pho is SOOOOO good and SOOOO cheap. Just about the best. I do want to see what it's like at Vietnam Restaurant - their bun was great, can their pho be far behind?

Thanks to raytamsgv for the warning...

They have gotten to know me so well that now about halfway through the meal they bring me a small bowl of just the broth! I don't even have to ask for it anymore! When I was there on Saturday, the manager brought me two!! ;-) I love places where they recognize you (and sometimes laugh). That is Pho 79 for me.

Pho 79 needs to make itself at home a bit more.

When I walked in there a couple of days ago, the place still had that distinct Korean BBQ aroma from the previous tenant at that location.
