Steaks in Hollywood

I have out of town colleagues coming in for meetings all day in Hollywood. The Senior member of the team wants steak and I need somewhere closeby to eat. I am thinking the Grill at Hollywood and Highland or Musso and Franks - any other places I'm missing? Thanks.

went with dakota. great ambiance, had the crispy pork belly (with morels, asparagus and fried egg), KC strip, and the table had sides of creamed corn (corn, mascarpone), creamed spinach, fries (black truffles and parmesean) and mixed mushrooms. sides were not remarkable, but good. i appreciated the small size of the sides - sometimes i think steakhouses go overboard. the KC strip was rare as ordered and good - although heavy on the salt. brioche donuts to end - nothing spectacular dessert wise. overall though - fit the bill and great time had by all.

If you want to be in Hollywood, I'd probably go with Dakota. I don't think NYers will be impressed by M&F. The "downtown" Pacific Dining Car is also pretty convenient to Hollywood proper, but I don't think that atmosphere will enthuse your NY guests either.

When you talk steak and visitor's Musso and Frank's is the only game in town.

Citizen Smith is also an option.

There's also Dakota at the Roosevelt.

dakota has very nice steaks. good for business/team types. hippish in decor. They also have an extensive wine list with some bottles in the five-figure range. I think that's just for the potlatch impulse.

sterling had good steaks but it's gone. taylor's isn't really right for your needs. And as for Musso's- - has to be the right out-of-towner. nostalgic and fun for us, but doesn't really impress.

If you've got mucho cash or if the team wants to go big, bit the bullet and drive to cut at the bev'y wilshire, designed by richard meier, wolfgang puck designed menu - might make the grade. Of course - where are the out-of-towners from and does it matter?

things are pretty intense for us work-wise with no end in sight, so CUT would be more appropriate for a closing meal - i'm afraid we're looking more towards a meal that's closer to central hollywood and would be a good meal to comfort us after a long day of marathon meetings. these guys are from the city, consider themselves steak snobs and often scoff at the (unfounded) stereotype of the LA dining scene as being 'weak'. I'm closer to M&F's simply because they pour good drinks and the character of the place is so unique, it would be open their eyes a bit. i know i'll likely lose any pissing contest with regards to a bi-coastal steak argument, so i'm looking for something representative of LA steak.

the city? Istanbul, London, New York (i'm guessing) or San Francisco?

The quality of the meat isn't the greatest at Musso and Frank's from what i remember. It's good but not "ONLY GET STEAK" good. You think they'll be impressed with the menu at musso's as fine dining? Check out the Dakota website

dakota is at the roosevelt so it's across the street from hollywood highland. the price might be a dealbreaker.

also consider Jar. Beverly near Crescent Heights.

sorry - THE city (NYC) - i say this tongue in cheek of course.

Ditto Jar, if you're willing to travel that far. I just got back from NY where I steaked at Wolfgang's and, while decent, it didn't hold a candle to the quality of meat or the overall experience of Jar.

Well, if you want to try Wolfgang's place again, it is opening in the former Umenohana space on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills some time in 2008.

Is the "Wolfgang" you are referring to, an ex partner of Peter Luger fame?

I believe so. He's got 2 locations in NY. And apparently, per Carter and the ABC, one on its way here. Again, 'twas good, but no Luger's.

If you decide on M&F for steak, make sure to get the porterhouse. It is the best cut they serve there and it is very good. Goes good with a side of their very old-school Béarnaise sauce too

I haven't been to Sizzler in years so wouldn't know, but would be very surprised if they served porterhouse, Béarnaise, and excellent martinis like M&F

Agree on M&F...very cool if they're into LA nostalgia, but not so much otherwise.

Boy, I hate to say this because Musso's is one of my favorite LA hangouts, but no so much for the food as the place where Hemingway, Faulkner, Chandler and Orson Welles had their liquid lunches. If that sense of history will impress your work colleagues, go for it -- but I'm not betting that's what they'll want.

Let me put in a good word for Jar which is "the"steakhouse of the moment and with good reason. I also liked Vert better than I expected considering I'm not a huge fan of Wolfie's offerings.

Bowery serves steak frites. And I haven't tried it, but Off Vine also has steak on the menu.
