While at a health food store with my MIL recently, she pointed the a copy of the new Bloodroot (Ct. resto) veggie and vegan cookbooks (2 volumes) and said she would like them for Christmas. She's a fairly recent vegan convert.

Aside from that being generally strange (IMHO), I would like to get her something she would appreciate, but I can't find much info on these books. They are self-published, so no reviews are in the usual spots. The only online review I can find is not complimentary.

Anyone tried these out yet? Any thoughts? And if not one of these, are there any rec's for a great starter vegan cookbook? This would be for a woman in her 60's who is newly vegan, so it would be best if the recipes were quasi-mainstream.

Thanks, all!

i am interested to see what responses you get. i really, really like isa chandra moskowitz' "vegan with a vengeance" cookbook. if you look past the punk-rock look & names of the dishes in the book, it's very solid, with good baking recipes and practical substitutions for non-vegan ingredients. i like very much that she doesn't have recipes calling for store-bought vegan "meats,"-- her recipes are well thought out, economical & healthy as a result. more old-school cooking with great, homey flavor sensibility. worth a look. good luck

Post-Punk Kitchen has a new Cookbook out...
http://www.theppk.com/nomicon.html

while i havent been able to look into the cookbook itself, i generally tend to like their stuff, very very tasty and diverse...they are also really good about real foods, vs subs, and also meals that appeal to other types of eaters at your table...

I was impressed when recently they were on Splendid Table for a thanksgiving special...Lynn is becoming much more tolerant...lol

i have said veganomicon sitting right next to me now (and vegan cupcakes take over the world behind my monitor) -- checked it out from the library, read all the recipes in like an hour, flagged like 60 of them, then ordered the book from amazon.

it is GOOD. you won't be disappointed. they even tell you 'yeah this is a lot like what is is VWOV, but we changed it like so because you asked us to'.. anyway, super fun book. very few pictures, but still awesome fun read.. with lots of great little tips.
