Squid Ink Pasta in SF?

t.susannah.chen Dec 2, 2007 09:07 PM

My friend and I have been on a mad hunt for squid ink pasta, and it seems that it can't be found anywhere. Is this a seasonal item? Or are restaurants just not serving it anymore? If you know of a place in SF that serves it, please let me know!

A16 in San Francisco has a great one. A few months ago, it was squid ink linguine with squash blossoms. The current menu offers squid ink tonnarelli with shrimp, tomato and garlic.

I've also had squid ink pasta at Panta Rei but found it quite bland and greasy.

Tried the squid ink pasta at A16, although it's seasonal. I also discovered squid ink risotto at Pesce on Polk Street...

Beretta makes a pretty good squid ink risotto. I loved it but my friends thought it was too fishy.

Da Flora (Columbus & Filbert) has a wonderful Risotto Nero, but call first, the menu changes

I've had squid ink pasta at E Tutto Qua in North Beach. It was pretty tasty, served with a light red sauce and seafood (I think it was shrimp, calamari, and clams but not for sure).

The Moss Room at the Academy of Sciences has a wonderful squid ink on top of calamari with risotto. Not pasta, but it was good.

I've had good renditions of both risotto and pasta at Incanto with squid ink.

Tonight i had a fabulous rendition of fideua negre, a catalan dish of noodles baked in squid ink, at Barlata in Oakland You might try that for a slightly different twist. Maybe its sister restaurant in SF, B44, serves it if you need to stay in the City.

I'm pretty certain I've had a squid ink paella at B44. It's definitely in their repertoire, just may not always be on the menu.

I checked the website, and both arros negre and fideua negre are on B44's menu. Here's the photo of Barlata's fideua negre,

I have enjoyed excellent squid ink pasta at La Ciccia.

Likewise, but remember the menu at La Ciccia changes regularly, so check before you go. I don't think it was on the menu when i last went a few weeks ago.

Ya need to take a ride to Redwood City, yes, Redwood City, and dine at Donato Enoteca. I have never had such delicious Squid Ink Pasta with calamari in my (long) life. You will not be disappointed!

My friend ordered it at Specchio and greatly enjoyed it, but as he was at the other end of the table of a large party, I didn't get to actually try it
