Some Tachinomi-ya in Tokyo

Silverjay Dec 2, 2007 02:35 AM

I bought a nice "Izakaya Gourmet" magazine the other day in Tokyo that has a section on tachinomi-ya. Below are some of them for the east side of the city, ranging from Kanda down to Oimachi. Not mentioned is one on the 5th floor of the Shin-Marunouchi building that specializes in offal (もつ/ホルモン). Also, in the B1 level of the Tokia building, between Tokyo and Yurakucho stations, is a fun Kyushu izakaya called "Kagoshima Kanoya Kiyoshi" (鹿児島 かのやきよし) which isn't a standing place but might as well be. Anyhow, regarding the places below, you won't have to worry about finding the starry-eyed Michelin crowd at any of them. And hey, none are in Roppongi either, though Shinbashi is technically Minato-ku...If your Japanese is alright, you can try throwing "立ち飲み" into Google as there is a lot of local blog coverage on the subject by "Tachinomi Otaku"...

Most of the food is prepared on plates on the counter. You pay for the plates ahead of time and then drink and eat. Mix of meat and fish dishes, including some sashimi. Shochu cocktails are 180 YEN!

Fous on kushi-yaki. Bloggers recommend the fried menchi-katsu, the meat croquets, and the corned beef. The shop is run by a husband and wife.

    Great stuff, thanks a lot.
Also, near Hachobori, this place Maru, is really popular and almost crowded after the later work rush. Its attached to a liquor store with a pretty good wine selection. You can purchase a wine and have them open it for a 500 yen fee. Pretty good food too.
