Where to find mini plastic jug maple syrup for gifts?

Hello,

Can anybody tell me where to find those small miniature bottle/plastic jugs Canadian Maple Syrup? I think I saw it somewhere, but just couldn't remember where.

Any suggestions for souveniers (something edible and small: candies, etc.) related to Canada are welcome :) Some friends are visiting us here and want to bring home something unique. They love the syrup!

Thanks!!!
Cecil

  1. There is a place downstairs at St Lawrence market that sells all things maple syrup, including those jugs you are looking for, truffles, fudge, etc.

Good call, millygirl. That's exactly what I was going to suggest. They also sell strange novelty tissue box holders...

LOL, yes I saw those last week, what a hoot!!! Ideal xmas present for someone you dislike :)

        1. re: millygirl

Let's hope they never sell toilet paper dispensers.

      2. re: millygirl

        yapp .. i saw them today :p
i've even saw some maple tea ?!?! are they nice?

      3. Chinatown! On Spadina, west side, just south of At Andrew Street. Look for a place with the tshirts outside and a blue/white sign. VERY CHEAP "Canada" gifts.

        1. Southbrook Framboise. About 25% of the cost of icewine and IMO more delicious. Available at many LCBO's.

          1. re: estufarian

mmm, yes. Southbrook Farms framboise is yummy, nice drizzled over ice cream too.

          2. On Sat, at the front door of the North St Lawrence market (Farmer's market), there is an old gentlemen selling maple syrup in all kinds of grade and class in small plastic bottles. He also has maple butter and candies.

There is also a store selling jams, spreads, salsa and dips from Niagara on the first floor of the Eaton Centre across the new nike store. Sorry, I cannot remember the name of the store. But they have nice icewine jelly and apple butter.

            1. Cecil:

Some Canadian souvenirs which I picked up awhile ago include maple sugar candies, maple sugar cookies, ice wine jams from Niagara, mock-moose droppings candies (kids get a kick out of the grossness), and maple butter. Some of the places which have nicer selection include Pusateri's, and, actually the gift shop at the Art Gallery of Toronto, where you can also find nice non-foodie sfuff like calendars and date books with Canadian art like Group of Seven.

CC, buying from the AGO sounds like there may be better quality control than buying from a souvenir shop. Do you notice a difference in taste?

                1. re: Googs

I am afraid I cannot vouch for the quality control, as I purchased the souvenirs to bring to relatives in Europe and I did not try any myself first. I can only say that the packaging was all very nicely designed and elegant as you would expect from the AGO. I would expect that the maple sugar cookies and Niagara preserves that I purchased from Pusateri's would be dependable in quality.

              2. Many of the major hotel gift shops have the things you mention.

                1. Thanks all!!

I will absolutely go to St.Lawrence's Market. Is it a corner store? The one mentioned by millygirl and yum2? I think I know which store it is, but any tips will be great.

Tree25 and CC, Niagara stuff sounds good too!!! I have not tried ice-wine jams, hmm..are they any good?

                  1. re: ceciel

Hey Ceciel, my family like the ice wine jam. If you go to the shop at Eaton Centre, they often have samples of jams (they provide bread as well) for you to try before you buy.

The St. Lawrence Market is most assuredly not a corner store! :) It's one of the gems of Toronto -- a huge indoor marketplace with dozens and dozens of food vendors of all types. The main building is on the southwest corner of Front and Jarvis and is open Tue - Sat. The north building across the street hosts a huge farmer's market on Saturdays. Wandering the SLM is a wonderful experience, so go hungry and give yourself a few hours. Butchers, cheesemongers, fishmongers, bakeries, peameal bacon sandwiches, veal & eggplant sandwiches, teashops, honey vendors, mustard vendors, the list goes on! Be warned that the market is absolutely packed on Saturdays after 9 am.

Ah, I just re-read the way I phrase my post :) I was implying to the store inside St.Lawrence's Market mentioned by millygirl, whether the store is a corner store at the lower level.

We went to St.Lawrence' Market the first week we moved here (second day, actually..heehee) and you are completely right, it is a gem! We will be taking our friends there sometimes this week and I can't wait for them to try peameal bacon sandwiches!

Thanks for the response to my new thread!! I think we'll check out Linda's or Salad King.

                        1. re: ceciel

If you walk in the lower level Jarvis doors, you will find the store referred to on your left next to the stairs.

                          1. re: ceciel

Hey ceciel, if you are going for sandwiches you must try the veal ones right by the maple syrup stall. The sandwiches are fantastic if you can get through the crowd.
But warning, they can be pretty messy to eat. Have fun and good luck with the maple syrup hunting.

                      2. If you're really hard up, you can find those min plastic jugs of maple syrup at Shoppers Drug Mart 24/7

                        1. re: orangewasabi

Huh, Shoppers Drug Mart!! I'd never guess. Thanks for the tips! :)

We are going to the Market and hope to find them there and of course, the delicious sandwhiches! Millygirl, I will try to check out the veal sandwich, but yeah, the crowds for anything in St.Lawrence can be a little bit crazy. We are hoping to go on Friday, so hopefully we can manage few sandwhiches and bags of maple goodies.

                          Thanks again!
