Egg Foo Young? - Phoenix Area

ejs1492 Nov 30, 2007 10:21 AM

Can anyone recommend really great Egg Foo Young anywhere in the Phoenix metro area? Where I grew up every Chinese restaurant had great "egg fu", but in my 25 years as a Phoenician I've yet to find any that I loved. Believe it or not, the best I've found is at The Red Chopstick in Sedona! I'm seeking big, fat, delicious patties.....not these little anorexic ones! I'm open to ideas and would love to hear from my fellow hounds.

Good egg foo young is hard to find out here in the West Valley, too. For the longest time, our only option was a soggy version at a local wok-slinging place. Now that there are two other options in the area, I'm a bit more satisfied.

One thing I've noticed is that here, egg foo young tends to come with a host of stir-fried vegetables. Back in the 'burbs of Chicago, egg foo young was a lonely dish. Is the side accompanying a Phoenix thing or a west coast thing?

Good question. The egg foo that I grew up with in St Louis consisted of egg patties which contained the meat, and a brown sauce on top. That is how Jade Palace serves it. However, I see a lot of it here where the patties are covered by a sauce that contains the meat and the veggies.

The best I've had out here is actually in Sedona, believe it or not, at a little place called The Red Chopstick. I actually had someone who was driving down from Sedona bring it to me!

Red rocks and egg foo young. I love it! Will have to remember that place.

Autumn Court's version does not contain any stir fried veggies, just bean sprouts in the patty and brown sauce on top. I know many people don't like this place, but I like their egg foo young.

I think both Best Hong Kong Dining (NW Southern/Dobson) and Totties Shaghai (SW Hayden/Thomas) both have pretty great egg foo yung!

Super Dragon place attempt. Don't feel bad, I struggle with this UI, too.

Might be a little out of the way from Phoenix, but in the metro area ... Chandler ... try the Egg Foo Yung at the Red Dragon on Alma School Rd just north of Warner (on the w side of the road). I'm hooked on their House Special egg foo yung ... NY style!! (even though I'm from Boston!) It's the best I've found in the Valley of the Sun.

Surprising place... Chino Bandido Takee-Outee. Theirs is just ok, but somehow ends up much better when served as a burrito.

Have you tried Autumn Court's version? I'm a fan, and crave it on occasion as well. I think they give you two or three patties per serving, and they are pretty good sized. Check 'em out.

Love the Egg Foo Young @ Jade Palace.....we always get the House special which is loaded w/ Shrimp, Chicken, Roast Pork and Beef.....the brown sauce is wonderful to boot...you can tast the Chinese 5 spice in it!
Had lunch @ Red House today in The Fry's Marketplace plaza on Via Linda and 90th street. I noticed they have Egg Foo Young on the menu...if it's as tasty as the entrees we had for lunch....it won't be bad.
Red House is wonderful for neighborhood take out......the place was hopping

We like Jade Palace too; my only complaint is that it's often quite greasy...not uncommon for egg foo, however. We'll definitely give Red House a try; I've never heard of it.

I just the tried Vegetable Egg Foo Young at Red House. It was deep-fried eggs - what's not to love? I'm guessing the op is looking for something a little better. The vegetable consisted mostly of frozen pea and carrot mix, with some freshly chopped onion. It came with a large cup of brown gravy and a large cup of rice. Three medium patties for about $8.50, including tax. It's a takeout place with minimal table service.
