Squill? [Moved from Food Media & News]
Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but can anyone please tell me what squill is? Jeffrey Steingarten referred to it in "The Man Who Ate Everything", but we aren't sure exactly what it is. Mediterranean crustacean? Thank you.
There is a genus of plants known as "squill". A syrup made from their bulbs is used in a lot of folk medicine? Could it have been the bulbs or an extract from them?
There is a crustcean called squilla, also known as mantis shrimp.
We ate some in Japan at the Tsukiji fish market.
Like shrimp but tougher.
