Jade oven or Turbo/chef
Interested in knowing if any of you hounds have looked at or purchased either of these guys. I saw the Jade several months ago in one of the foodie 'zines, but don't have room for it....or the dollars, for that matter. I'm now seeing ads for the Turbo/chef and need any feedback available.
Thanks

My husband and I recently moved into our new house and had a TurboChef oven installed. I have to say that the TurboChef oven has changed our lives. We can make cinnamon buns in 2.5 minutes and 2 steaks in 6 minutes. I don't know much about the Jade but I would highly recommend the TurboChef.

TurboChef is unique in that it is a marriage of a modified/miniature impingement oven and combo-microwave. Works extremely well at quickly baking & roasting.
Jade is a respected manufacturer of commercial equipment that was branching out into home appliances. It got wrapped up/whipped around by the Whirlpool acquisition of Maytag and shelved a lot of plans but now is owned by the well respected Middleby Corp. They make and market commercial ovens from Blodget, but I don't think that technology is in the Jade products (yet)...

As a low cost compromise, look at the Nesco Jet Stream oven. This is a countertop ultra high speed convection oven and does NOT replace your regular oven or microwave. However, it's a really nifty appliance. Their ads claim it can do just about everything, which is far from true. But it does produce a perfect crispy/juicy roast chicken in about 25 minutes. In short, what it can do (some, but not all, roasting and baking), it does amazingly well.
Two important notes about this unit:
- There are several other widely advertised countertop ovens that look similar and sound similar in their advertising. Thane is one widely advertised brand, and there are others. None of these is comparable or worth buying.
- Early Jet Stream ovens (American Harvest branded) performed well but were very badly made. When Nesco bought that company, they discontinued the product. Users of the early, crappy, models raised such a fuss that Nesco improved and reintroduced it.
It's no Turbo Chef, but it costs around a hundred bucks.

We love our turbochef. It's jaw-droppingly fast and gorgeous. We've made everything from Chateaubriand in 18 minutes to chicken nuggets in 50 seconds. We started to cook things outside the built-in menu — and so far everything's turning out great. We haven't taken advantage of the on-call chef for oven setting help, but we plan on it.
