This is one dish I am really intrigued by. It seems to have been one of the primary loan foods to Hawaiian cuisine by Puerto Rican immigrants along with maybe the rice and pigeon peas (gandules). The only place I recall coming across it was at the Ala Moana Center's grocery store on the bottome level - wrapped in tin foil.

Have you seen this anywhere else?

    1. KUKUI SAUSAGE CO, at the farmer's market (Kapiolani com. college), makes their own pasteles and has it for sale packaged, on a bun, or on a toothpick (free samples, baby!) pretty good....

          I have only bought pastele sausage from this company which of course would fit on a bun.

            pastele sausage? I thought pastele was a sort of puerto rican "tamale"

              Kukui Sausage Co. makes said pastele sausage as well as many other varieties. Hank's Haute Dogs serves their sausages on their menu.

        2. My mother is Puerto Rican...I guess that makes me half, yes...unless my dad's Ozarkian heritage dilutes that even more than 50%...hahha...but anyway, I grew up with pasteles. The most wonderful dish in the world, as far as I am concerned.

          I have no idea what many of these posts are referring to...traditional pasteles are made from a masa of green bananas, green plantains, or yucca. Sometimes a few other root vegetables are used. My favorite is the green banana which they hand grate and place on a banana leaf, topped with a pork/potato/green olive/sofrito mixture, tied up in a tamale type wrapping (and this is where the tamale similarity ends) and boiled for an hour or so.

          It unwraps into a native Taino Indian Puerto Rican bundle of love.

            Well I can tell you that I have had the most wonderful pasteles exactly as you described!!!!! Heaven on a plate! This guy who used to work with my husband had a mama who loved to cook for a crowd and she'd make up hundreds of them and rice and other delicious things to go with them and come to the plant and set up lunch for everyone it was awesome. She'd always tell my husband "take home plate for your wife" and she'd fill it up with a massive amount and I was in paradise for the night. Too bad the co-worker does not work there anymore! I know there used to be a guy who sold them along Kahekili Hwy. near Lulani St. in Kaneohe but I never stopped to buy any, he sold them out of a cooler.Thanks for sharing your

              those are the kind of Pasteles I know about, but have only had them sold out of the back of a truck, including the truk manomin mentions (they were very good).

                There is also a house in Kaneohe near Castle High School that sells "pasteles and rice" on certain days, they put a sign in their front yard with the date/time. I've never tried them but they are a constant offering so they must be good, funny I go by there frequently and I can't remember the name of the street, it is one that has this huge house with literally thousands of lights and light up plastic figures everywhere during Christmas near the Puohala elementary school - come to think of it, maybe it is Puohala street!
