Rec for Veg Mom - Union Squareish

Meeting my mom for dinner on Friday (on the early side, 5:30ish)- I'm down at NYU, she'll be around 24th Street. She's vegetarian, I'm mostly veg, and we need a place that will have a final bill of $60 for both of us, tops. Anything yummy, preferably healthyish?

  1. Casa Mono would work, although you should make a reservation.

or Republic is good for veggies

I disagree with all of the above!

Casa Mono has a few vegetarian items, so it's fine to go if you're with others who eat meat, but I would never recommend it to a party of vegetarians.

Pure Food and Wine will come out to over $60 for both of you.

Republic only has a few veggie dishes. They don't do substitutions, so the options really are limited.

It's not super close to Union Square, but how about the South Indian places on Lex near 28th? They're completely vegetarian, totally delicious, and will come in under your budget. I recommend Pongal and Madras Mahal.

I really like Nirvana - it's Sri Lankan, on 3rd near 19th - and it has tons of veggie options and is very tasty, too. And I think it's still BYOB.

    2. Republic is always great. Maoz has great falafel (but only 4 seats). Tisserie has good veggie options (sandwiches, salads, quiches) and is a really cute place.

      1. What about Patsy's on University Pl? You can get a salad plus pizza with veggies as toppings (or no toppings) -- it's a cheap, tasty and (relatively, for pizza) healthy meal.

        1. Not too pricey - Galaxy Global Eatery on 16th and Union square. Amazing veg and non-veg stuff. You can get grasshopper legs and she can get barbequed seitan (soy) among many other creative things. The rosemary tofu skewers are really good there, as is the catfish. It's a great atmosphere (trendy but low-key) and they have some fierce drinks.

Mesa Grill - 17th & 5th.... a little pricier, but a really cool spot. Amazing food, great atmosphere, pretty trendy.

pure food and wine is really good but you will definately go over $60, unless noone drinks and noone orders app's.

          2. Via Emilia, on 21st, b/t PAS & B'way, has excellent pastas, several of which are vegetarian-friendly. They don't take reservations, but if you are going early, you should not have difficulty getting a table. Cash only.
