My favorite restaurant in Vancouver has got to be Vij's.It is a personal take on Indian food that is both modern and classical at the same time.

re: chazzerking
I have to agree with this recommendation. Vij's seems to be one steady star in the Vancouver restaurant firmament. With Hawksworth gone from West (His last night there was 22 December) and Feenie out of Lumiere and Tojo's not quite the same after expansion, Vikram Vij still carries on, though it is awfully hard to get in these days.
There are many fine places downtown (by the Westin Grand), but different places will appeal to different tastes. Many swear by Chambar, but I've never liked the food there. Le Crocodile is one of Vancouver's stalwarts. You couldn't go wrong there.
I like the space occupied by Griffin's at the Hotel Vancouver. I've never tried it for breakfast. It's probably no better or worse than other places, but the room...

Breakfast - Elbow Room at Davie and Richards
Izakaya - Alpha's at Richards and Helmcken
Malaysian - Prima Taste at Robson and Seymour
Bar/Pub - Kingston Taphouse, Richards 1/2 block north of Seymour
- Subeez, Smithe and Homer
Quick Bite - Sushi place in the HMart supermarket food court, Robson and SeymourOf course if Yaletown is not too far away, you have a lot more choices for dinner and bar.

I think the problem with these lists is that it is too open ended.
From my perspective: based on the subject line alone, you will get people who will add West, Salt, C, etc etc. I might add these names too, however, I think that as great as West is, I don't "love" it as much as I "love" my favorite mom and pop Chinese restaurants, etc...furthermore, I'm pretty sure my list will include Wendy's. ;)

re: fmed
Waay too open ended. Plus, you're also asking for a tremendous amount of work from people - most people don't have 3 hours to write up a top 10 with "why" it's there. A reason for why often helps as well (you're doing research for an article, you're planning on visiting, you're just curious, etc...). People like to know what you're going to do with that information.
Lastly, just from my own standpoint, if you put in 10 seconds to type up a one sentence query, it doesnt appear as you're taking the process very seriously. Did you do any research prior to this question? Why do you want to know? Any specific interests? Some background or history about you? Something that shows you're invested in the process, and why other hounds should invest time in answering your question.
Anyway, just my opinion...based on your posting history, it looks like you're writing a book. But that sort of disclosure would be nice if it were the case.

re: formerlyfingers
formerlyfingers/alex8alot:
I am not in Vancouver so have no personal knowledge of this apart from what I discovered after some googling of that "other" foodie web-site.
Hawksworth is reportedly leaving West this month and is moving to the Hotel Georgia to open his own restaurant as part of the hotel's redevelopment.
That redevelopment is purportedly a year down the road.
Does not seem to be anything at all like the Feenie battle with partners and associates.
