Red Light and Kris Wessel (Miami)

I drive by the Motel Blu a few times a week in the hopes of seeing the space completed. Anyone know when he's supposed to open? I'm hungry!

Kris Wessel, formerly of Liaison on Espanola Way and Elia in Bal Harbour, is open up a new place called Red Light in the Motel Blu at around 70th & Biscayne Blvd. I drive by every day on the way to work. My commute is too early in the day to see whether folks are working or not, but I haven't seen much visible progress in the past month. It looks like they have banquettes and lights already installed.

I heard a rumor that there will be brunch around the pool and a raw bar as well. Do we know if there will be a resto in the Vagabond hotel?

The restaurant space at Motel Blu backs onto a little river and I know they're looking to use that back space - didn't know about the pool area.

The Vagabond has a sign up to lease restaurant space and it could be an awesomely neat space if done right. I was under the impression they were converting the hotel to all office / retail space, but I could be wrong, I see some articles saying they are looking to put in some retail but also re-start a hotel operation as well.

Another space that is screaming for a good restaurant is the International Inn on the beach side of 79th Street Causeway. MIMO architecture and huge two-story-glass views of Biscayne Bay.

Paninoteca was great when he was there. Never made it to Elia. How was it?

Elia was really nice. Mediterranean bent to it, some interesting dishes. It was in the space which is now La Goulue (and was also for a time Petrossian, another place I miss). Liaison, Wessel's place on Espanola which was sort of New Orleans style, was great too.

Both of these were restaurants where after they closed I was kicking myself for not going more often.

I still can't figure out why Carpaccio is always packed and the restaurant on the opposite side never makes it.

Wessel is from New Orleans and I hope his new place is in that style.

The Vagabond is a sensational space; I hope we get another winner on this side of the causeway. There's signage for a Bengali resto on 20th and another potential churrascarria (pardon my spelling) on 30th.

      2. Just posting here what I noted in another thread ->
Red Light (Kris Wessel - sp? new place in Motel Blu at 70th & Biscayne) is looking closer - appears that the bar is in and fully stocked. Can't tell what's going on in back of house but seems they're making progress.

Saw that some of the plastic was off of the booths and the side has been painted with red and white stripes. I drove by a few weeks ago and there seemed to have been a party. The inside and outside sections were packed. Maybe it was a painting party because everything looked covered with tarp the next day. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the opening. The location is a huge gamble but it seems Kris Wessel isn't afraid of a challenge given Liason's location on Espanola. I think he'll get a more receptive audience in this location.

        2. I see that Red Light is tied in to Art Walk in the MiMo association, there is some event tied to Basel this weekend.

Doors were open, folks were inside, valet parking for Art Basel was set up (maybe they're running a bus back and forth), so something definitely going on this weekend.
