Rudy Mikeska's in Taylor

  • 4

I went with my family for some post-Thanksgiving BBQ at Louie Mueller's yesterday only to find that they were still closed for the holiday. We went across the street to Rudy Mikeska's, and I have to say that was some of the worst barbeque I've had in a long long time. And I've had some bad barbeque in my day. I think they do better work even at places like Rudy's and Pok-E-Jo's. I sampled the brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. None of the meats had anything in the way of smoke flavor. The brisket was especially bad -- dry, almost like jerky in spots, and just tasted like salty, oven-roasted, meat. The sausage was unremarkable. The pork ribs were the best (or more accurately, least bad) thing there. They at least had a peppery rub to give them some flavor and the texture was a good medium between tender and firm. Again, no smoke flavor. The rib portion was mercifully small. Plates come with three sides, and I chose potatoes, beans, and cole slaw. The cole slaw was sweeter than I prefer. The beans and potatoes were completely unmemorable. In retrospect, I wish we had retreated to the intriguing Mas Fajitas restaurants we passed on the way into town, but next time I'll be sure to call ahead to make sure Mueller's is open.

  1. I've tried other Mikeska's operations as well -- and had similar sub-par experiences too. This family operation seems to be operating on reputation alone.

    1. Did this location close? It's not on the Mikeska's web site any more. I can't say I'd really miss the food, but it was kind of a landmark.

      1. re: srogers

I saw them featured on a Bobby Flay special and all I could think was, "So close, and yet soooo far!"

srogers - they're directly across the street from Mueller's parking lot. Have a stagecoach as the branding.
