Has anyone taken a good knife skills class in the area? I'm in Marin but can go to one wherever. I'm trying to find one so I can hint about it as a holiday gift! Thanks.

I took one at Sur la Table with Mike C.. He owns Kitchen on Fire in Berkeley, so I wonder if he taught JasmineG's class. He also teaches for City College sometimes.

The instruction was quite good. He has too much schtick in his delivery for my taste, but the quality of instruction made it worthwhile. One evening, 3 hours, $70.

Yep, Mike C. taught the Kitchen on Fire class. I agree with the too much schtick, but he also really knows his stuff, and he was really good at the instructing part. They also have a Knife Skills series (check out their schedule, I think that they have three different classes teaching different things), so you could pick and choose.

This is probably too far for you, but I gave a cooking class offered by the Palo Alto Adult School as a gift to someone, and we both chose the knife skills class. The class was $40, I think. I was a little disappointed by the class-- I was hoping to learn how to julienne and do fancy cuts, etc., or in the very least, learn how to chop really quickly the way some of my friends know how to do. It taught basic knife skills and stuff like how to hold a vegetable so you don't chop your fingers, but not some of the topics I wanted covered. I might try to take a knife skills class at SLT.
