Try Crossroads Cafe on Delancy near Brennan. They may not be open at 5am though- that's a lot to ask in SF.

Lori's Diner on Mason St. is open 24 hours. Not much will be open before 7.

If you are up for something more exotic than ham 'n eggs at 5:00 AM, there's also a 24-hour branch of Naan 'n Curry on O'Farrell and Mason.

I read somewhere on this board, I think, that Naan'n Curry is serving breakfast now.

          There's also Pinecrest Diner

There's also a 24 hour Starbucks on Powell

Of all the joints, sadly I'd choose Starbucks ... though its been a zillion years since I've been to Lori's Diner.

Here's one more place - Cafe Mason next to Lori's. Haven't been so maybe someone else can comment.

starbucks sounds perfect actually. i don't need breakfast, but a comfy seat and a hot tea is perfect. would it be safe to walk the couple of blocks by myself at that time of the am? being female and all, I am always concerned.

About as safe as any of the places listed in that area. I'd just pick the place closest to your hotel. Union Square borders a bad neighborhood, The Tenderloin, so some of that spills over. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be ok.

the tenderloin? really that is the name of an area...sorry that kinda makes me giggle, is that a nickname or the actual name? We are on Sutter & Powell at the Cartwright. Where is the Tenderloin?

"The tenderloins is bounded on the North by Post Street, on the East by Taylor and 6th Streets, on the South by Mission Street and on the West by Van Ness and Ninth Streets."
