pho's on prince in flushing - gone?!
i was craving some porkchop over rice, spring rolls, pho, so i made my way over to pho's last night on prince st in flushing. this was around 7PM. totally dark, empty, and looked like it was closed for good. my dad says he heard rumors that the rent might've been too high.
i went to mekong in the shopping area where han ah reum as a substitute, but i still think that pho's is better. even that fishy sauce at pho's is more strong and pungent like i love it. mekong's was watered-down and too garlic-y.
any insight? tia.

I'm not sure which Pho on Prince street you're talking about...one of those restaurants across the street from the parking lot?
I happened by this place because it's very close to the tea place that specializes in Taiwanese High Mountain Tea. This is probably not as good as what you're looking for, but there's a newish Pho place 35-34 Farrington off of Northern Blvd called "Pho Wins" whose broth is a little more cinnamon-y than any other place I've tried, though it wasn't as beefy as I'd like. I am willing to go back and try another time only because it seemed like a pretty down to earth place, not a place trying to be hip. Oh, and there was Chinese-dubbed Korean TV drama series playing on TV....

Hling, what;s this teas place, where is it?

oh, it's Luh Yu Tea Emporium at 137-03 Northern Blvd. 718 353 5632. The tea people are in the basement with an outside entrance. It's not a cafe, but the owners are good at tea making. I've spent hours sitting there with them drinking through the whole process of kung fu tea before buying the leaves. I believe they are closed on Tuesdays. They are probably the only people in town who has some Da Yu Ling tea from Taiwan, if you are interested in that sort of tea.

There is a new Vietnamese restaurant -- opened last week -- in the same building (39-07 Prince St) that houses Spicy & Tasty. It's on the corner of Prince and Roosevelt in what used to be Accord Cafe. It's called Pho Viet Trieu and the phone is 661-3388. I haven't tried it but the menu lists 17 kinds of Pho plus all the usual Vietnamese entrees. Including pork chops over rice.

thanks for the tip.
the place i am talking about is called pho's, it was on prince st and 38th ave, on that row of restaurant across from that logistically-nightmarish, tiny municipal parking lot.
66 used to be at the corner of prince & 39th ave, kitty corner to sheraton's, which has also become something else. a few doors down was a malaysian place, which seems to have been replaced by a restaurant with a very red, bright, obnoxious awning. pho's was at the end of those restaurants.
sigh. i'll have to check out these other pho places - but this particularly pho's had the formula down pat that is not found in other locations i've been to...

Yellow.com lists a place at 38-02 Prince called Pho Vietnamese Restaurant (wouldn't be the first time the sign and menu read differently from the phone listing). This sounds like the place.
Speaking of pho, do you know about this one? Sounds like your neck of the woods ... http://www.chowhound.com/topics/462548 .
It's gotta be right around the Bayside branch of Pho 32, the Vietnamese-Korean chainlet. Wonder if it's de-chained itself and now goes by Pho 24, or if someone got the number wrong.

Linda,
I was at Spicy and Tasty last night and we parked in the nightmarish municipal lot. I am almost certain that Pho was open. Hmmm....I am also fairly certain that the Mekong family owns Pho on Prince. I know for certain they own Green Papaya, Dumpling House, and Corner 28. I also thought that Pho was a part of their ever-growing empire.
Last night after a sublime dinner at S and T we went to the newish Pinkberry branch on Roosevelt. It was jam packed. We had a large plain with pomegranite, mango, and captain crunch. Definitley tangy and delish, although I must say that it's marriage with the all the ma la that was in my stomcah made for an interesting evening. I will spare you the details.
I'll be back in downtown Flushing later this week, and I will look for you.
All Good Things,
lisa

I ate in Flushing toningt and I walked past Pho's and there it was, at 38-02 Price, open and thriving. It must have been closed for vacation when you went past, but it's up and running now.
Incidentally I ate at the restaurant with what you call an obnoxious awning. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Flushing. http://www.chowhound.com/topics/454983
