Hoover Dam - Valley of Fire trip

I'm driving from the Hoover Dam to the Valley of Fire. Are there any noteworthy places to stop between them?

Also, if anyone has any recommended routes, I'd be up for that! Looking at the map it seems like Route 166 would be a pretty drive and fairly direct.

I'm staying in Henderson, so any local places around there would be appreciated, especially if the foodie finds are few and far between on the trip. I can eat a big breakfast and/or buy a nice lunch to take with me.

Also, would people recommend driving out to VoF first and then working my way back to the Dam, or starting at the Dam?

  1. If you're an early bird do the dam first. It can get very crowded. Best time to visit if you want to beat the crowds is first thing in the morning. As far as eats go, you wont be too far from Green Valley Casino. Right behind it is Lucille's BBQ. Been there twice and enjoyed it both times. Make sure you go hungry. Very large portions. Reasonable prices. Fair selection of beers on tap. I'll be in Vegas in about 3 weeks and will probably hit Lucille's myself. Let us know.

    1. It is a pretty drive. Once you leave Boulder City I think the only stopping point is the fireworks store on the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza, so you may want to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at Valley of Fire.

If you choose to eat in Boulder City on the dam end of the trip, I recommend the enchiladas at Carlos Mexican Cafe (561 Hotel Plz, Boulder City, NV Tel: (702) 294-6640). I like the pine nut ans spinach enchilada, but traditional favorites are also represented.

If you do end your day in Boulder City, you might also consider Milo's Best Cellars, a wine bar with outdoor seating and sandwiches and salads.
