Shrimp Stock

I am trying to find uncooked shrimp with the heads still on. (I want to use the heads for stock.)

Santa Monica Seafood does not carry uncooked shrimp with heads, only pre-cooked. Whole Foods doesn't either.

Any suggestions where I might find them on the Westside? Greater LA area?

Thanks,

Any Chinese supermarket in the SGV will have it.

Try Hawaii Supermarket, SE corner of Valley and Del Mar.

Okay, I know this is over two years old, but you can get the whole shrimp with heads on - which is critical for stock in making gumbo - a Seafood City on Vermont, just a block north of 3rd Street. It is a wonderful market with lots of fresh seafood and other ingredients which caters to Filipinos. Great place to shop.

There's also a Seafood City near the Glendale Freeway (#2) at the Eagle Rock Plaza, lower level, 2700 Colorado Blvd.

99 Ranch Market almost always has head-on shrimp. (But don't forget, you can use uncooked shrimp shells for stock as well. Whenever I do Etouffee, I save the peels and when I get a pound or two, cook 'em into stock.)
